Mooney. 1800's. Kings Co. Galway. Co Louth. Drogheda
« on: Thursday 12 April 12 07:20 BST (UK) »
Hello

I am searching for information on my g.g.g.grandfather (Denis Mooney) and his family in Ireland. The information I know is:

Denis Mooney (Dennie) married Ann Fox. (my 3rd great grandparents)

I have found two children of Denis & Ann (listed on the children’s death certifiactes):

1.   James (Jas) Mooney born c.1820 Kings Co.
married in c.1845 in Galway to Mary Cannon (name recorded as Canning, Conolly, Canan, Cameron, Canon).
Migrated to Australia in 1840’s.

2.   Margaret Mooney born c.1821 Kings Co.
married in Ireland to Charles Donnelly.
Four known children (William, Annie Rebecca, Charles, Margaret Lucy) born in Ireland between 1840 & 1852 in Co Louth & Drogheda.
Migrated to Australia in 1850’s.

I would like to know any information about these families in Ireland and why & how they came to Australia.

Thank you.

Have been researching many early families of Victoria, for abt 40 years. The Mooney family is one of them. John Mooney was the son of Denis Mooney and Ann Fox - so its a match. I have a large tree and a fair chunk of it is on Ancestry (Yuille_Martin) tree.  Attached to John Mooney is a draft story on him - I say "draft" because he was a bit of an interesting character and new things come to light every so often.  He married (three times) and had children by two of the wives.  He wa one of the reputedly wealthiest Irishmen in Victoria at one time  but died in dire and poor circumstances.

A very colourful character with some very dubious activities but very prominent and wealthy connections.
Cheers

Hello Darleith

Thank you for your response. I too have been researching my family tree for many years so it is nice to meet someone else I can share & exchange info with.

I have seen the info on John Mooney however I can't make the connection to James & Margaret as I have not seen any mention of Denis & Ann on any records. Also the birth year for John is c.1800 which means that his possible siblings (James & Margaret) were born 20 & 21 yrs later.

I will send you a PM.
