Anton Ludwig SOLBERG
« on: Thursday 12 April 12 06:10 BST (UK) »
Hi Janrm,
I guess genealogy is important to us in Australia because the country is only slightly over 200 years into settlement - which means we all have ancestors who were from 'somewhere else'. It's not the same as a country with centuries of history on the doorstep!

Anyway, a 'case study' sounds good to me.
I have very little information on my Gt Grandfather but I'm hapy to supply the little that I do have:

Name: Anton Ludwig Solberg.
Born: Christiansand (I think),Norway.
Occupation: Sailor.
Married: Ada Maud Florence Hall in Fremantle, Western Australia in 1893.Anton stayed 'on land' for approx 18 months before taking a job on a ship bound fo Fiji. He returned after 3 years.
First child: Hilda Amelia Solberg born circa 1899.
He took his wife & Daughter to Norway where second daughter Lilly Solberg was born. After 3 years there they returned to Western Australia.  Ada's family paid the fare for her & the children but Anton only paid his own fare as far as Bremerhaven, where he asked the Captain of the sailing ship if he could work the rest of his passage to Australia - this was denied and he was put off the ship. He promised to find another ship & work his passage back.
This never happenned and after 8 years with no correspondence his wife filed for divorce which was granted in May 1916.
No one ever heard from Anton again - he could have fallen overboard, gone back to Norway or sailed somewhere else. - No one knows!  (But I'd really like to know!)
Regards,
Milly Mac.

Hi Milly Mac,

The NZ Society of Genealogists (NZSG) Kiwi Index lists only a few 'SOLBERGS'.

In 1907 a Mrs SOLBERG aged 34 accompanied by a Miss SOLBERG aged 10 travelled from Melbourne VIC AUS to Bluff SLD NZ aboard the MAHENO.

In 1872 a Christian SOLBERG married a Miss ARCOURT.

In 1901 a miner named Christian SOLBERG (same bloke?) was naturalised. The place was Callaghan's, but someone else will have to tell you where that might be.

The NZSG have a Pedigree Collection record for a Augusta Frederica SOLBERG.

And there is a cemetery record for a Mary SOLBERG.

A Christian/a SOLBERG aged 79 was buried at Hokitika WLD in 1905. Because there are two records it isn't clear if deceased was male or female but it was probably the Christian Solberg who was naturalised in 1901.

A Mary SOLBERG aged 58 was buried at Kumara WLD in 1887.

Hi all,
Thank you for the information - I'm not sure I have a 'Christian Solberg' in the family - that name has never cropped up. The problem is simply "how do I tell if they belong or not?"
I don't know if there was more than one other seaman in the family or even if Anton emigrated alone or with family members. ??? There seem to have been other Solbergs in W.A. around the same time and I know that Anton's cousin offered him a job on a ship but quite honestly, your guess is as good as mine ;D
I can only hope something new will crop up.
Thanks again for all your help.
Milly Mac.

Hmmm...

I've had a look in the Norwegian Emigration databases with no luck so far.

I have a feeling this could be a hard one!

Any idea of Anton Ludwigs year of birth? Groom's father's name from marriage certificate?

Hi Jan,
As far as I can decipher, I believe Anton's father was Olas (or Olaf).
Married in 1893- Fremantle W.A.
I think his mother was Christina (but I've no proof of that).
