« on: Sunday 15 April 12 14:14 BST (UK) »
Hey,would anyboby be able to help me with coast guard records please,i have tried downloading from the national archives, but won't let me.
I'm trying to find some information about my great great great grandfather William Stoat 1824-1892,he was a coastguard,he married in Dingle in january 1857, i believe he was stationed in Ballydavid,Castlegregory,Wicklow and maybe Kent, and also trying to find out about his father James Stoat who was also a coastguard, and William's father in law Thomas Gaughen who was a coastguard.
Thankyou.

Is this the marriage of your James ?

William James Stoat & Sarah Gaughen - 27 Jan 1857

His residence is given as Ballydavid which is on the Dingle peninsula to the north of Dingle town. In ADM175/019 pg 167 of 472 there's a listing for William at Ballydavid Station as follows :

Date of Appt. to this Station : 11 Dec 1856
From whence nominated : Henry Daring[?]
Name :    William J. Stoal alias Stoat         (as entered in the book)
   Quality : Boatman
   Transfer Reason : Removed
   Date of Transfer : 13 Apr 1859
   Station Removed To : Castlegregory
Cause of Transfer : Good of Service

In ADM175/019 there's a possible mention of his father (pg165 of 472)  at Ferriters' Cove CG Station. This is the neighbouring station to Ballydavid.

Hey Shane,
Thankyou, yes, that is the marriage of William and Sarah.
Birthdates of children match up with the dates of transfers to different stations, would you know of any way of finding out where William and James were born?I have found Thomas Gaughen on the 1841 census,he was born in Devon,England as were his wife and children, but can't find the Stoats anywhere, which makes me think they may of been born in Ireland.Would a boatman been part of the navy?i believe Thomas Gaughen was navy and must of been posted to ireland.
Thanks for all your help.

A boatman was a rank in the Coastguard.

It's worth tracing back coastguards back as far as you can as the location they signed up in can be a clue to their origin. I'm not sure what the 'Henry Daring' refernce refers to on James record - hoping someone else will recognize that as a CG station or ship.

I'll have another look for other details on James later..

My gtgtgt-grandfather was a CoastGuard and he signed on in Bray, Co. Wicklow, and he served at several locations in Ireland and one posting in England. We eventually found a record of him in BT113 in Kew. This is a type of register of seamen, his place of birth, year of birth, height etc and also his current address - which matched his CG posting. I dont think it's available to downland yet..

Hi

Can I just clarify the name of his last ship, its not 'Henry Daring' but rather HMS Daring. To find out about his career before entering the CG service you need to consult Daring's Description Book at the National Archives, Kew (ADM 38/7928). Not only will it provide a list of the ships he served on, but also a physical description and a place of birth. However, I have found the birth date and place for William in ADM 175/53 pdf 187. He was born 15 December 1824, Barnstable, Devon.

Re Thomas Gaughen he entered the CG Service on the 23 July 1831, signing up at Belmullett, this suggests to me that he was a local man, not from Devon, but I could be wrong!

23 July 1831 to Bridport
7 Aug 1833 to Beer
31 Jan 1837 promoted to Commissioned Boatman remained at Beer.
26 Oct 1850 to Brandon (William Stoat was serving at this station at the same time (ADM 175/19 pdf 170)
17 July 1862 to Barrow
31 Jan 1865 Superanuated

Just checked the CoY website, and there is the death of an Agnes Stoat, wife of James Stoat CG, 4 Feb 1831 Dingle, kerry.

For James Stoat I thought I would start a fresh post.

He was nominated to the CG Service on 25 January 1821 from Barnstable, with a first posting to Port Isaac. However, there is rather a strange note in the nomination book (ADM 175/74 pdf 44 & 45) - Discharged having at present bad legs & (?). Clearly he must have eventually taken up the appointment, because he went on to serve at Port Isaac and other stations.

20 July 1826 to Dingle
31 Aug 1828 to Blasketts
5 Jan 1833 to Fritters Cove
3 Dec 1847 to Lack

At this point I stopped tracing his career, but can complete it if you wish.

In the 1834-35 religious census there is a James Stoat in Dunquin Civil Parish, Ballyickeen Townland. This records 4 members of the family, 2 male & 2 female, all are protestants.

Hi Martin,
Thankyou, you've found out so much :)
I checked the 1841 census again, and i think you may be right about Thomas Gaughen,it doesn't say where he or his wife Mary was born, their children were born in Devon, matches up with the dates you found.Their first child was born in 1834.
James and William were from Barnstable, thankyou. It seems the Stoats were English and the Gaughens were Irish, that was my first thought.
Thankyou again.
Louise.
