William Street School
« on: Sunday 15 April 12 16:39 BST (UK) »
I went to a convent school in William Street Dublin in the 1950's.  Can anyone tell me what happened to it and what order of nuns taught there?  I can find anything about it on line.  Thank you.  from Saintly

Hi Saintly,

Welcome to Rootschat!

I sad to say I can't help you but am hoping that one of the Moderators will be along to move your post to the Ireland board, where I think you will do better!

Saintly,

Just on the off chance at Clarendon Street off Grafton Street Dublin there is a Carmelite church, St Teresas and at the back of that which leads into South William Street there was a school  I think it was know as Clarendon Street school and the Holy Faith order nuns ran it.

Hi Saintly. It's probably the school in North William St that you are referring to (between Summerhill and the North Strand).

Here's the link to the official school website (girl's school):

http://homepage.eircom.net/~stvincentsgns/index.html

and to the boy's school:
http://www.stvincentsboysschool.ie/index.html

The old school building was still there in 1964, but has since been demolished and new buildings erected.

Hi Saintly

I went to St Vincents North William Street. I was one of the convent girls. I was there from 1958 to 1966. The order of sisters were The Sisters of Charity of St Vincent De Paul. St Patricia was Mother Superior of the convent when I went in followed by Sr Columba. My first teacher at the school was a Miss Caufield. Other teachers I remember were Biddy Rowe 3rd class taught us to knit. Sr Kevin taught cookery. Sr Finbar 2nd. class Miss Collins 4th class. Sr Monica ran the girls school and I think Sr Lucy ran the boys. We went to St Agathas church next door.  We learnt our cathechism off by heart also times tables. Have lots of memories.

Regards

Marieanne.

Hi, I too went to St. Vincent De Paul's School in North William Street in the 1950's, leaving in 1958 to go to England.  I have fond memories of the School.  My name was Dempsey, perhaps you may have been in my class!  Sister Monica was very strict but I had Sisters Claire and Michael.
