Hi,

Does anyone know any info regarding St Monica's Maternity Home at Bramerton St, Chelsea. A church of England. Closed in 1920.

Any information would be greatly received.

Kind Regards

Hi Karen

There seems to be very little information on line.  The only thing I can find is to check with London Metropolitan Archives for info/records.  Maybe a phone call or email to them  may be of help to you.

Best wishes with your search Jeanette

Hi,

Thank-you to everyone for your help. My grandmother was born in Wallis yard Workhouse. But I cannot find her on the 1911 census.
But found a 5 week female in this hospital, that could tie in with my grandmother. Her mother is not there though.
Do you think this hospital was a holding place aswell? For maybe fostering?

Kind Regards

Karen

My mother was born was in Fulham Road Infirmary (which at the time was known as Westminster  city  of  poor law union) previous to that it was known as St Georges poor law union of which Wallis yard workhouse came under.  It was run by the City of Westminster Board of Governors. My mum's twin sister came through the poor law union for her foster care.  So your Grandmother could be boarded out/fostered through St Monica's.  The C of E diocean were involved with social care.

You could contact Kensington and Chelsea local studies or Westminster archives and also London Metropolitan Archives.  I have found all 3 extremely helpful and that was both by phone  and email.  It took me about 18 months to unravel the mystery behind my mother/twin and their mother so a long search but extremely rewarding.

Good luck with your search Karen
