Which Regiment Please
« on: Saturday 21 April 12 18:27 BST (UK) »
I hope this is the right section to post this since I don't think it is relevant to a World War.
Could anybody help regarding this gentleman's uniform. He was Henry Edward ROE (ROWE): not a military man, but a shipwright / carpenter. He was born in Gosport in 1855, married in Cardiff in 1878 and was still in Wales in 1881. By 1891 he had moved back to Hampshire, but was found again living in Cardiff in 1901. In all the census returns he is a civilian.
The cap badge looks similar in shape to that of the Welsh Regiment. I was trying to determine when the picture may have been taken and to find out why he was in uniform. Unfortunately, I don't have the original print.
Wocha, Vocha, Vautier, Dehais, Delahayes, Horsburgh, Lucas, Roe, Vaughan, Rosser, Tully, Osborn, Dick. Huguenots.

I would agree with Welsh Regiment. Other regiments have the PoW feathers, but the short curly scroll is on the Welsh Regiment cap badge.

The tunic dates from 1915-1916. If he did not go overseas there will not be a medal card for him. He may be wearing a plain medal ribbon - possibly for a Long Service Good Conduct medal. It will be for a Volunteer or Miltia unit if you have him in most censuses.

Thanks for that, Ken. He is obviously no spring chicken in this pic, but he would have been quite an age in 1915. Would they have had volunteers age 60?

Could possibly be The Pembroke Yeomanry(Castlemartin)
which has a slightly longer ribbon with the wording Fishguard whereas the Welsh regiment has Welsh or Welch

The badge in the original picture is a bit hard to decipher but I agree it's probably either the Welch or the Pembrokes

I'm not sure on this one but isn't the white (?)  lanyard significant ?
i.e. not worn by infantry, which would rule out the Welch regiment and could point towards the Yeomanry.

There is a public tree on Anc... which covers his Birth 1855, marraige1878 and death, all census from 1861-1901 and his trade was a  carpenter.
Have located him in the 1911 census still a carpenter at 55 resident 83 May Street Cathays ? Cardiff.
If the tunic date is 1915-16 he would be 60!
At 55 he would have been too old for the Great War .
Could he be a Territorial Reserve for home duty?
Or the photo is not who you think it is.

My sincere thanks to all who have replied. The Pembroke Yeomanry line is one I hadn't considered. If I ever crack this one, I'll let you know.
