Orphanage in Nenagh
« on: Monday 23 April 12 17:50 BST (UK) »
I have learned there was an orphanage in Nenagh from 1900 run by the Sisters of Mercy. My mother was sent there in 1921. I was told it wasn't "State run" therefore there was no requirement for the sisters to keep records of the girls in their care as they would have done in a State orphanage.
Does anyone know anything about this orphanage and whether it is still operating?
Also, if it wasn't run by the State, who paid for the upkeep of the children? In my mother's case no relatives came forward to assist so I don't know who was her benefactor.
Grateful for any info. Thank you.

Most orphanages at the time were run by religious orders (both RC and Cof I)
There was some state financial support to them. Have you been in touch with the Sisters of Mercy in Nenagh - if not here is a contact
Sisters of Mercy (Nenagh)
33 Yewston Est Nenagh Co. Tipperary
(067)32830 ...
and another address
Sisters of Mercy (Nenagh)
 Ashe Road Nenagh Co. Tipperary
(067)33835 ..
One of these should have or know where the records are.

Orphanage in Nenagh

This Orphanage is listed in the 1911 Census as on Goal Street, Nenagh..

http://www.census.nationalarchives.ie/pages/1911/Tipperary/Nenagh_West_Urban/Gaol_Street/820818/

I am not able to find that on any maps, or even the historicasl maps I looked at..
Would someone know what Goal Street, is called today? I am wondering if the Building is still standing..
Thanks

Peter

The convent next door has Sister of Mercy nuns but when I look up where their convent is I get the one built in 1913.

In 1901 they are on Peter's Street, which is the street leading to the (newer old) prison
http://www.census.nationalarchives.ie/pages/1901/Tipperary/Nenagh_West_Urban/Peter_Street/1698023/
fairly sure it's the same school but possibly the Orphanage isn't there, the nuns are at number 14 but the house and building return images are not working so it's bit difficult to work out.

There are very few people on Peter's Street in 1911 but the same/most of these people are on Peter's Street in 1901 along with the nuns etc.
It may be that some of Peter's Street was know as Goal Street.
On the modern map St. Mary's is behind the court house at the end of Peter's St.
Sister's of Mercy school is called St.Mary's.
