Giles Powell Pugh born 1864, Battle
« on: Thursday 26 April 12 04:51 BST (UK) »
 :)

Hello!

I am searching for the baptism/christening of Giles Powell Pugh, born 1964 in Battle, Brecknockshire, he was the 3rd son of Samuel and Elizabeth Pugh. This is according to the Census of 1871, where the entry for places of birth seem to have been entered later. The Library of Wales couldn't find a record for this event, so I must assume that either the Parish is wrong or that it took place in a non-conformist chapel.  His elder brother (by one year) was born 1963 in Aberyscir, so maybe Giles was baptised/christened there. The whole family of parents and six sons had moved to Llanfillo by 1870, and they seemed to have moved around a lot (Llanfihangel Nant Bran, Aberyscir, Gwenddwr, Llanfillo) between 1860 and 1870.

I believe that non-conformist records are held at the Powys Archives in Llandrindod Wells, but I can't get there fom here (Canada).

I would appreciate any help I can get!!

Thanks

Hello!

Of course, the 2nd son Evan was born in 1863 not 1963!!!

Birth registration is:

March qtr 1864
Brecknock district    vol 11b, page 110

Pugh, Giles Powell

You can order the birth certificate from GRO https://www.gro.gov.uk/gro/content/certificates/default.asp

In 1881, his place of birth is given as Talgarth. (RG11, 5466, 34, 29)
In 1891, his place of birth looks like Aberipkin? (RG12, 4381, 55, 25)
In 1901, his place of birth is once again Battle, (RG13, 4968, 64, 14)

Hello KGarrad,

Many thanks for your help here!

I tried to get the 1891 Census for Giles on FindMyPast, but the only record I found was for a Giles Pugh living in Montgomery with the wrong parents and the wrong age. I couldn't find the record with Aberipkin on it.

Do you think the GRO would be able to locate him without knowing the exact place of birth? That would be a good start, and then I can look for the baptism record itself...

Best wishes

Llanfi :) :) :)

With FindMyPast, you can do a census lookup by reference!
(That's why we include references ;D )
Go into a census search, and click on the "census reference search". Then enter the numbers I showed in the previous post.

When ordering certificates from the GRO, they don't need to know the exact place of birth! ;D
They need to know the year and quarter, the volume and page number. The Registration District also helps.
All his information I have given you.

Hello KGarrad,

I would never have found him without your help. FindMyPast had him indexed as Giles Powil Pagh. Your reference numbers located him without question, and I have emailed FindMyPast to get them to change their index reference to Pugh and not Pagh. It looks as if the place of birth is Aberyscir, the same as his elder brother Evan.

That clears up a lot of issues for me, and I have ordered a birth certificate from the GRO. Once again, this web site has helped me enormously in my research. I particularly appreciate the input from members like you!! :) :) :)

Cheers,

Welsh non conformist records available in you local Mormon FHCenter. All on film and need to be booked and viewed in their library. Many of the items from these registers also on the I.G.I. Aberpikin must be Aberyscir Parish

Back again and again. Non conformist registers after 1837 are very rare. Might not have been chr. but should have had his birth registered=a legal  requirement. Consider a ch. at Battle Church.
