Montreal 1949 - 1963
« on: Thursday 26 April 12 17:33 BST (UK) »
Hi All,
I'm looking for some guidence as to how to search  for records in Montreal.

My ancestor emigrated from England to Montreal in 1949 and died in 1963.

He lived in the The Town of Mount Royal, Montreal and is buried there. I know his last address and the cemetery he is interred in.

I'm looking for his death notice so if anyone could tell me the name of the local newspaper it would be a great help.
Also, where would his medical records be held, he died in Queen Mary Veteran Hospital, Montreal.

thank you

eileen

The two English-language papers were The Gazette (sometimes called The Montreal Gazette to avoid ambiguity) which was a morning paper, and The Montreal Star, an evening paper. The Star folded in 1979 and I'm not sure if it's been archived.

I'm not at home with my bookmarks at the moment so I can't give you a link but I'm pretty sure the Gazette has a complete archive somewhere...maybe someone else can find it for you.

Cheers,

Hi,

You can try the Google Newspaper Archive.  It has the Montreal Gazette.

Oh, excellent! I had a browse through there this afternoon.

Eileen, you say your ancestor lived in Town of Mount Royal, and is buried there....is he buried in Mount Royal Cemetery? Did you know that the cemetery is not in Town of Mount Royal, and has nothing to do with TMR? It's the general Protestant cemetery for the whole of Montreal.

Not really important, just wondered if you knew :)

Thank You for your quick response, China & RK

RK, that link to newspapers is brilliant. Unfortunately, it does'nt appear to have 11/12  February 1963 which is the date in question for the death notice.

I will search through the newspaper and hopefully he will be mentioned as he was a Real Estate Agent in the town of Mount Royal.

I live in hope and maybe the luck of the Irish will be with me.

Thank you both so much

eileen

Hi China

No, I did'nt know.  This is the first time to search Canadian Records and I don't have  a clue where to start.
He is buried in " The Field of Honour, Point Claire, P.Q.
He was born in 1898 in England and went to Canada in 1949.
The Irish branch of his family know very little about him and I would love to put the pieces together.

Ah, I know it. Pointe Claire is quite some way from TMR, but I know the road they would have driven.

Death notices in the paper were customarily published for 3 days...did you check the following days?

Hi,

You might check with the Montreal library to see if they have newspapers in their collection.  Maybe they would have the dates you are looking for?

Also - you said you have his last address.  If you would like to know if he lived there in earlier years, you can check the Montreal Directories online.   There are business listings in these Directories too, so you might find his Real Estate company.   Start with the Série Principale and choose your years to search.

http://bibnum2.bnquebec.ca/bna/lovell/

(The Directories are pretty much in English, but you have to access the more recent ones using the French prompts.  In case you need a bit of help, choose Annuaire alphabétique montréalaise to get the individual listings.  Choose Annuaire montréalaise d'affaires classifiées to get the business listings. )

RK :)

THANK YOU SO MUCH

China, I have found his death notice 2 days after his death. Unfortunately, there is no family mentioned but it did confirm his place of death and burial ground.  I wonder who put that death notice in the Montreal Gazette.?

RK, He is not listed at  the last address I had for him (from his burial record) 1963  But, he is listed for 1961 but not before or after. Also, the business listing looks promising ! I have found a realtor with variant spelling and listing the company he worked for and an address.

So, a few more pieces of this puzzle are fitting together, with your help.

Again, thank you so much.
