Looking for Annie McCabe (Hastie Cochrane)
« on: Monday 30 April 12 13:54 BST (UK) »
I would like to complete the history of my greatgrandmother Annie McCabe who emigrated to Canada possibly in the 1920s after the death in 1920 of her husband James McCabe. They lived in Bainsford Stirlingshire Scotland. Annie's maiden surname was Hastie and her first marriage was to Hugh Cochrane.
It's possible she was connected to Calgary and/or Medicine Hat.
I would be grateful for any info from her descendants.

Annie McCabe was born Annie Hastie approx 1856 in Airdrie. Her parents were Hugh Hastie and Elizabeth nee Aikman.
She married Hugh Cochrane 5 Oct 1877 and James McCabe 4 Aug 1915.
It would be wonderful if you have some info on her. I'm just about to start searching passenger lists to Canada.
Thanks for getting back to me.

There is an Ann E. McCabe (1857-1928) buried in St. Mary's Pioneer Cemetery, Calgary.  Could this be her?
There are several other McCabes buried in this cemetery and a number of McCabes buried in other Calgary cemeteries.

Thank you so much Linda. I don't know yet if it's her but it looks possible, the dates could fit.
The middle initial E isn't mentioned on her marriage certificates but that doesn't necessarily mean anything. I will have to get a copy of her birth certificate to check it out.
I'll check out that site you sent me, you've been a great help.

You could try contacting the cemetery to see if they can give you a precise date of burial.  If you get that we can check for an obituary in the Calgary newspaper.
There is an email address for Calgary cemeteries on this link:

Linda you're amazing, you're putting in so much effort on my behalf!
I've found an Annie McCabe in Hillside Cemetary in Medicine Hat but there are no years given however maybe I can get into the census sites.

Actually, I think the Hillside Cemetery website gives that Annie's date of death as 7 Feb 1936.  It's kind of hard to decipher because they write it all as one long number (19360207.)

On Anc**try here is a border crossing document for Ann McCabe, born in Airdrie, Scotland, dated 31 October 1925. She sailed to Quebec from Greenock on the S S Montcalm.  She had lived at 1116 Seventh Ave., Medicine Hat from 1919-May 1925, when presumably she returned to Scotland for a visit.  She was a housekeeper, returning to her daughter, a Mrs. Nellie Bonie,  living at 1116 Seventh Ave. Medicine Hat.  She names her son as Mr. Arch. Cochrane, 25 Tron Square, Edinburgh.
