Help needed with a letter recipient please
« on: Tuesday 01 May 12 09:12 BST (UK) »
A distant family member recently gave me a letter from an American cousin who visited England in the 1970s.  In 1979, he wrote a letter to a relative in the US explaining his family and also copied this letter to his English cousins.  I had assumed he was writing to his cousin Mildred Elizabeth Lincoln (nee Johns) in Michigan.  But the letter was address to:

Mrs M. R. Protheroe
2803 jefferson St
Baltimore, Maryland 21205

He calls her Millie but suggests in the letter that her name is Mildred, like his wife.  The writer is George Walter Johns of California.

For the life of me, I can not work out who Mildred Protheroe is and how she fits into the family.  I can't find a marriage, death or birth and not even the social security records can help.  And it's definitely not Mildred Lincoln or any of her children.

Can anyone please help me work out who this lady is

Thanks,

Jenni

There was a Millicent R Protheroe born September 12 1887, died Baltimore December 21 1989.

Visited UK ( Tremeadow, Hayle, Cornwall ) in 1956. Was then a widow.

US address in 1956 was  123, North Lucerne, Baltimore

Oh, that's really helpful thanks.  I got mislead by him referring to her as Mildred which I guess was an assumption on his behalf.

Can't find her on any of the US censuses.  I wonder if she did not come to the US until the 1930s?  Maybe she'll appear on the 1940s census.

Also, surprised I can't find her on a phone register.  I need her husband's name as a point of reference at least.

Fantastic!  Thanks Shaun.  It gave her maiden name as Rosewarne and that solves the family mystery for me!  Thanks so much!

No children mentioned though, so I might not have much luck tracing that family.

Really appreciate all your help!

I met great aunt Millie Prothero when she visited Cornwall in 1983 or 84. Her parents were William Henry Rosewarne and Esther Ellen Roach, both buried in Ludgvan graveyard. Her brother John married Ada Stevens, who after his death emigrated to Canada with family including daughter Avenel Olive. Sorry if this is all obvious, this is my first acquaintance with the site.
