Barrasdale (Barras Dale) Farm - Weardale
« on: Saturday 05 May 12 00:35 BST (UK) »
My g,g,grandfather Thomas Walton, along with six of his siblings was born at Barrasdale (Barras Dale) Farm County Durham in 1815.

Barrasdale (Barras Dale) Farm is located between Brotherlee and Westgate in County Durham. I would like to know if anyone could advise me as to who or how I would be able to find out the name of the owner of the property at that time.

Thomas Walton was born in 1815, his father was also Thomas and his mother was Jane Wearmouth.

I am in contact with the current owner however although interested he does not know the history of the property as he only purchased the property in recent times.

Any help I can obtain would be greatly appreciated.

In the Durham record office catalogue there are references from 1791 and 1797 to John Walton son and heir of Joseph Walton of Brother Lee or Brother Lea, variously described as yeoman or miner. John Walton is described as being "of Barrasdale" and in one document as gent. and in another as "miner". If you go into the Record office search feature and type in "Barrasdale" you will get the key documents - in a whole batch of other mining documents.

John Walton, my name is Bill Longstaff (William Ridley Longstaff) and my family lived at Barras Dale for some time around 1841 raising their family of 6 there. (Matthew & Hannah Longstaff)
Matthew died young and Hannah took charge letting out half the house to another family to raise income.
I too have visited BD recently and spoke to the tenants but do not know who actually owned the house at any period. Please contact me for more information and swap notes on the forum (*)
