Bracken
« on: Monday 07 May 12 04:43 BST (UK) »
I would very much like information regarding the birth of William
Joseph Bracken born 1838 in Offaly.
I know his father was Loughlan Bracken and his mother
Elizabeth Langley.
I would be most grateful to have birth dates of William and also
his parents.

Thank you so much.

Jodaw :)

Do you know what part of Co. Offaly your Bracken family lived - i.e. which parish or town ?

see : Introduction to Irish Records
My Ancestor came from Ireland - where do I start?

p.s. what denomination were your Bracken/Langley family ?

Hi Jodaw

I could be wrong but I am presuming this is your family

http://www.census.nationalarchives.ie/pages/1901/King_s_Co_/Mounterin/Conspark/1460785/

The Loughlan & John listed here I think are brothers to your William Joseph

I found the baptism of a John Bracken to a ? Bracken and Elizabeth Langley in 1844 in Offaly, so might be a good match to the John on the census.

I also found a Margaret Bracken born to ? Bracken and Elizabeth Langley in 1839.

John and Margaret were baptised in Birr RC church.

I found a Loughlin Bracken on the Griffiths Valuation for Birr Offaly

http://www.failteromhat.com/griffiths/offaly/birr.htm

Likely to be the father of William Joseph due to the rarity of the name.

Thank you shanew147 and taramcdsmall.

Much appreciate your help.
I don't know when they were born, but do know that they had a son
William Joseph Bracken supposedly born 1838 in Offaly.
I have information that suggest that Loughlan was born in Parsonstown
Kings County.

Pastonstown is an old name for Birr, which is the parish that Tara located those baptisms for likely siblings of William. Unfortunately the baptism and marriage records for the parish only go back to May 1838, so maybe just a little too late to have recorded your William.

Hi Jodaw,

If I was to hazard a guess I would say that Loughlan was born about 1810 and Elizabeth about 1815.

This is based on the presumption that William Joseph was their first child born 1838, then Margaret in 1839, John in 1844 and Loughlin Jr about 1845.

Thankyou Shane147 & taramcdsmall.

I do appreciate all your efforts.
I have to agree that it sounds very likely that William Joseph has brothers
Loughlan & John and sister Margaret.
It is a pity that the records do not go back further, oh that I could time travel.
