Maria Langton of 20 Embankment Gardens, spinster, who died 9 January 1904

You would think that she was Henry Langton Stephenson's mother, but then she is called a spinster. Not sure what to make of that.

It's possible to trace Maria back through the censuses. She lived in Streatham in 1871 so that ties in with the 1870 conveyance of property from James Stephenson.

Possibly his god-mother?   Do you have Henry's birth certificate to confirm the name of his mother?

The Times of 29 February 1904 has a report of Maria Langton's will.

It lists many bequests to various charities, including £1,000 to the NLI for the purchase of a lifeboat to be called the Maria Stephenson !

Hi

3rd October 1822 St Bride Fleet Street City of London (Bridewell Chapel) appears in both registers
Henry Langton of the parish of Cookham Berkshire and Maria Stephenson of this parish precint by licence
Both signed
Witnesses John Stephenson, William Walter Langton and H Stephenson

MARIA LANGTON
Birth:  20 DEC 1828
Christening:  15 FEB 1829   New Chapel Lady Huntingdon-Nc, Maidenhead, Berkshire
Father:  HENRY LANGTON
Mother:  MARIA

see for further information this topic on the Berkshire board

The 1841 census with the two Maria Langtons looks to be a doppleganger. There is a marriage of a John Langton to a Maria Johnson 17th January 1821 at St Katherine Creechurch in the City of London. Their daughter Maria (father John Langton butcher) married in 1848.

Wow. So Maria Stephenson married Henry Langton (brother of mayor John Edwards - we already knew he married someone called Maria) they have a daughter Maria who marries James stephenson (a cousin or something - or maybe as no marriage record they didn't officially marry) and they have sons with middle name Langton.

As she is referred to as miss Maria Langton in 1870 and later spinster this further supports the idea that they didn't marry, just had children...

What do you think?
