Does anyone have info on this place or if their old records are available.
I had a family member out there, trying to find out more about her

You could try the Health Service Executive www.hse.ie.  if you live in Dublin their head office is Dr Steevens' Hospital Dublin 8 (no longer a hospital just offices) phone (01) 6352500.

I am unsure of that, but, they should have some idea where all records are held. There is a Central Mental Hospital at Dundrum Road, Dublin 14 phone (01) 215 7400 which might be of some assistance. The Government body would be the Department of Health, Hawkins House, Hawkins Street, Dublin 2 e mail info[ at ]health.gov.ie

What time period are you talking about ?

Did the person die in St Ita's and were they buried in the communal graveyard beside the sea or were the buried in a family plot elsewhere ?

Understandably many families who had relatives (locked up) in St Ita's were embarassed to disclose any information within their family because of the percieved shame of it.

I use the term locked up as in certain cases St Ita's was used as a means of getting rid of a troublesome family member sometimes over property right or money in addition to its use as a place for people who had mental health problems.

In the old days if you signed someone into St Ita's or any other psychiatric hospital then you could only be the person who signed them out which sadly served some families well in getting rid of a troublesome family member.

Hi David

Did you have any success with this?

I run a website about Donabate/Portrane in the Great War

and would like to add a page about St.Ita's and the men suffering from Shellshock etc that were sent there.

Regards

IanC

Hi Ian
The site sounds great. My grandfather and his bro fought in the great war. I would be more very interested in talking more to you about it all!!

Hi David

You can email me on *

I'm also Chairman of the recently formed Dublin Branch of the Western Front Association and our website is at: http://wfadublin.webs.com/

I also note that you have an interest in Doyles & Redmonds from Wexford, my wife was a Doyle and has Redmond connections through them, from Bunclody, any possible connection?

Regards

Ian Chambers
