Burial lookup Boyce / Boice
« on: Monday 14 May 12 12:33 BST (UK) »
I am looking for the burial of William Boyce born 1816 in Ditcheat Somersetshire.
He could be listed as
William Joseph Boyce / Boice
or Joseph William Boyce / Boice
or even just William Boyce / Boice
as we have conflicting info on the family name
We know he was still alive in 1871 but died before 1891 census.

He may be buried with his wife Jane Boyce / Boice nee Walker who later died on 15 May 1906 age 82 in Pontypridd South Wales ,
but we are still unable to find her burial either so possibly her body went back to Somerset.

Info already obtained -

He was last found on the census 1871 census  at pecking mill Evercreech aged 53 with his wife Jane and children.
RG10 / 2440 f43 pg 1  .

Several of his children then moved over to Pontypridd Glamorgan South Wales shortly after this.

On the 1881 census Jane is in Pontypridd living with her son and his family  age 58,
but it does not show if she is a widow or married  RG11/5293 f 83 pg 3 film 1342274
Pentrebach Road , Pontypridd.

On the 1891 census Jane Boyce is still living with her son and family and now shown as Widow age 68
RG12 /pg33     Gelfran Tce near Rockingstone House,s Pontypridd

I have Jane Boyce who died 15 may 1906 age 82 ( Death Certificate obtained )
but am unable to find her burial in Pontypridd.
I am hoping she has been taken back to Somersetshire and buried with her husband.
They have Jane listed as widow of Joseph Boyce  " Mole Catcher " on Jane Boyce's death certificate .
All help in the Evercreech & Ditcheat or Shepton Mallet area would be much appreciated.
Regards,
Dave Boyce

Re: Burial lookup Boyce / Boice / HORE /HAORE

There has been a bit of controversy regarding my Boyce line going back to 1790s' where it seems that  some were shown as Hore / Hoare and they later changed their name to Boice and Boyce on some census forms and Birth Registry . I believe that this was done due to an illegitimate child later taking on his fathers surname rather than the mothers of Hore as registered.
Later on between 1815 up to 1843 their children some of whom were shown originally as Hore also changed their name to Boice / Boyce. There is a Birth and Death of a young child named Frederic Hore within a few years yetthe parents are then shown as BOYCE in the Census forms a year earlier in 1841.
This has been very confusing as some researchers have simply added and amalgamated all the same people as Boyce / Boice with the birth and marriage info but have not explained why you are unable to find them whilst researching the family info, this is because they were registered as Hore / Hoare in official records until around 1815 when their names gradually changed. I wonder if this was done for legal reasons of parentage for a will or due to a member of the family getting into trouble somehow .

I believe that Jane Boyce May be buried at St Ilan church Eglwysilan which is situated on top of the mountain overlooking both Pontypridd and Caerphilly areas.
I have checked at Glyntaf Crem / Church and she is not registered as being buried or cremated there.

Parish of Eglwysilan 1906

Item 613  Jane Boyce aged 85 of Treforest .
Burial undertaken 19th May 1906
Service taken by D Lloyd Rees

But it doesn’t state which church or graveyard she was laid to rest.

Have you discounted William Boyce who was living in Somerset at the time of the 1881 and 1891 census?
1881 Evercreech, William Boyce. Occupation ag. lab aged 69 b Ditcheat. Married but no wife living with him or family.
1891 Shepton Mallet Union, William Boyce Occupation, labourer. b Ditcheat, aged 74. Married

There is a burial at Evercreech on the 30 January 1892 aged 73 years. Notes on burial say, From Shepton Mallet Union.

This is probably the same William Boyce in all three records given that it is quite an unusual surname.

It’s a bit of an awkward one as Jane Boyce is in her sons home at Pentrebach Road Pontypridd shown as a Widow in April 1891.
Yet William is shown as being in a workhouse in Somerset rather than with his family who are doing well in Somerset or Pontypridd.

There are 2 William Boyce’s in and around Ditcheat / Evercreech the same time.
My William Boyce actually changed his name from HORE to BOYCE prior to 1851 census ( I have that info )

It could also be this William Boyce who died in 1886 :
• Bath Reg Oct-Nov-Dec 1886 5c424 age 67
