Marriage in 1788 at St. Clements, Sandwich, Kent
« on: Thursday 17 May 12 08:50 BST (UK) »
Hi Folks

I am looking for details of a marriage of George Colebrooke on 16 Jun 1788 to Hortense Celeste Griere or Grieve.

I am not sure about the spelling of the brides surname. Also I am interested to find out who George and Hortense's parents were if this is possible. I believe that George's father was Robert Colebrooke.

Any help would be gratefully appreciated.

Regards

Hi Peter

Thanks for your reply.

I suspect that the Ancestry tree you refer too is mine.

Does anyone have access to the marriage records of 1788 for St. Clements?

Any help to identify the age of Hortense Celeste Griere and who her parents were (I think they were French) would be much appreciated.

Hello Richard,

Here's your marriage from the Bishop's Transcripts:

George COLEBROOKE married H. C. GRIERE on 16 June 1788, he being a bachelor and she being a spinster.  The marriage was by banns so without consulting the original parish register marriage book I am unable to advise you who the witnesses to the marriage were, or what the bride's full name had been.

In any event, you would not learn the name of either party's father or mother unless one or both were under the age of consent, i.e. 21 and a parent's consent had been required.  The best way is to try to track the witnesses.

There were no COLEBROOK(E)  or GRIERE individuals baptised in the C of E in any of the three parishes of Sandwich.  Nor were George or Hortense buried there.

So, all in all, I don't know of how much help this information is to you, but sometimes every little bit helps.

Regards,
Susan

Detail on the Marriage (by Banns) Register was that the Groom was Mr George Colebrooke and the Bride was Miss Hortense Celeste Griere (a Minor)

The witnesses were Wm. Harrison and George Temple who was the Parish Clerk.

Hope this helps in some way.

Regards,
Tony
