I am trying to find the occupants of 14 Waleran Buildings, Old Kent Road on the 1881 Census. I have been unable so far to find any reference to Waleran Buildings on the Census. Can anyone help please?

Waleran Buildings were erected 1881-1890 and may not have been occupied at the time of the 1881 census.

I can pinpoint my Gt Gt Grandmother to 14 Waleran Buildings in 1882 so I guess she must have been one of the first occupants. From there she disappears into thin air. Her name was Alice Barnes (nee Wheeler) and she had been widowed in 1881. I have the Waleran Buildings address via a probate record for her husband. I suppose any records of early tenancies would be long gone. I have tried checking records for a remarriage and of course death but nothing. All a great mystery. Curiously there was another Wheeler listed at the same address in Sep 1898 but I can find no family connection there as she hailed originally from Berkshire and this other Wheeler family were well established Londoners. All a great mystery.

The first mention of Waleran Buidings that I can find in newspapers is in October 1881 when the first batch of dwellings is being advertised for letting at 5s 6d per week for 3 good rooms with each dwelling containing separate domestic conveniences.

If that's the case looks like its her then. Exactly correct D.O.B. and district. Have you any idea where people from that neck of the woods would likely have been laid to rest. Nunhead possibly?

Possibly - you can check some burial indexes at Southwark Local History/Family History library in Borough High Street http://www.southwark.gov.uk/info/200330/family_history_research/2072/family_history_library
