Matthew Fortescue genealogy
« on: Saturday 19 May 12 15:44 BST (UK) »
Can anyone help with the parents of Robert Bruce Wood (1782), father of Matthew Fortescue Wood(1829)?  Six generations had sons named Matthew Fortescue.  I would particularly like to know why this name is significant to the family and if it is the result of a marriage .   I have MFW(1829) born in Louth, MFW(1863) born in Somerset and MFW(1919) born in Port Elizabeth, South Africa.  It would be interesting to know which of the MFWs emigrated.
The present generation of MFWs live in Johannesburg and have kindly supplied me with photos of all six for the family tree.  The photo of MFW(1829) has him wearing a Masonic collar so the family was most likely Protestant.

Have you looked at Brendan Hall's Co Louth genealogy site. There are some references to a Robert Wood there.

Many thanks for the link - this is the same Wood-Ferguson family but unfortunately does not go back far enough.  Dudley.

Dudley

You have probably looked at this already but the Matthew Fortescue on it had a few daughters one of whom is stated as marrying in County Louth so there must have been some connection to the county. There is also one of his daughter's listed as private - maybe she's the missing connection - long shot I know !

Many thanks Tara.
The missing connection must be right there but the exact detail remains elusive.   Hopefully the answer will be found somewhere.

Dudley.

Hi Dudley - I saw your post below on Robert Bruce Wood (1782), father of Matthew Fortescue Wood(1829) and wondered if you ever had any success with your search? The reason that I ask is that Great Grand father was a Matthew Fortescue Wood from Port ELizabeth, RSA and am therefore interested in your research.
