Michael Clearey
« on: Sunday 20 May 12 22:03 BST (UK) »
According to 1871 Census Aged 36 born Tipperary, Ireland.

With just this information I am looking for suggestions for possible avenues for research, either via the Internet or visiting Ireland - is it as I suspect a "brick wall".

Thanks & Regards

Cleary is such a common name that without a parish you might find it difficult to pin down exactly which is your Cleary.

Thanks for the reply.

Difficult or impossible is what I expected made worse by the variations in spelling, Clearey, Cleary or even Clary

Hi 'AlbertJ'

Did Michael Cleary get married ?

If so do you have the cert to get his father's name and occupation ?

This can help narrow things down a LOT !

Tara

Hi Tara

Thank you for reply.

Marriage certificate list him as Michael Clary (signed with a mark).

His father was Francis Clary - Game Keeper.

Thanks

Hiya

Have you ever used rootsireland ?

They have old pre 1864 church records (transcriptions only). I'm not sure how many Tipperary parishes that they have on their files.

Looking at their free index I can see 2 children born to a Francis Cleary in your timeframe in Aghnameadle CI Church and 2 children born to a Francis Cleary in your timeframe in Newport CI Church. None of them appear to be a Michael though :(

I have heard that CI records sometimes have father's occupations on them, so it MIGHT be worth gambling and getting one of the records to see if you can get a match, occupation wise. I suppose it depends on how much you need / want to know.

These placenames may or may not come into play at a later date if you get any other leads.

As Francis was a gamekeeper he most likely is not showing on Griffiths Valuation as he would have been working for someone.

I'm wondering is there some sort of land records that you can check to see how he was 'gamekeeping' for. I imagine he would have been working for someone with a bit of land, so it might be an avenue worth trying.

Best of Luck

Tara

Hi Albert,

Sometimes when Irish people came over to England - they tended to live very near to other Irish people from the same location.

If you check the adjacent pages of the census record for your Michael -- there may just be others born in Ireland, who have given a more explicit birth place. That would then be worth exploring on Roots Ireland, or Family Search.

As a matter of interest - I have Clearys in my ancestry - from Nenagh, Tipperary. My Nenagh family moved in the early 1870s to Oswaldtwistle (near Accrington) Lancashire, where they remained. Michael is a prevalent name in my Cleary family (but it is in most Irish families!).

May I also suggest that you try searching the other censuses after 1871 - just to see if a place name has been slipped in on one of them!!

Regards June

Lancashire, West Yorkshire, Southern Ireland, Scotland.
