Gregory & Twiss of Kiltegan
« on: Tuesday 22 May 12 03:43 BST (UK) »
I’m posting this in the hope of finding descendants or anyone who has knowledge of the Gregory and Twiss families who lived in Kiltegan at the time of the 1901 and 1911 census.

John Gregory and  Francis Twiss were both Royal Irish Constabulary men and the family story is that they married sisters of my great great grandmother Elizabeth Cooper.

Hi Tara,

Thanks for your reply.  This is definitely the correct Twiss family and I believe Francis William is the son of the couple I'm looking for.

Francis Twiss married Margaret Cooper in 1846 and I've found her death in Kiltigan in 1882.

Gregory is another matter.  John Gregory is 25 years  older than his wife on the census records so perhaps it was his second marriage.  I hope if I buy that certificate it will say he was a widower but it still won't give me his first wife's name and there doesn't seem to be a match for an earlier marriage.

Hopefully I'll find a family member who can set me right on this.

Thanks,
Jan.

Hi Jan

I take it then this is the John Gregory that you are looking for

Is this Jane the other 'Cooper' sister that you are researching ?

Hi Tara,

Yes this is the John Gregory but I think perhaps Jane was his second wife.

Her maiden name may have been Boyle.  This marriage was in 1884 in Rathdown so could be the one I'm looking for.

I think I'll order this and see what I can find from the certificate.

Hi Jan

Did you get the marriage from familysearch ?

I don't see a John Gregory getting married in Rathdown in 1884 ???

I got it from Ancestry where you can also see other people on the same page of the marriage register.  That's where I got the name Jane Boyle.
