I am trying to find out about my great uncles's service in the First World War. He was William James Grice and was with The Royal Field Artillery serving in

C Company 167th Howitzer  Brigade
and
D Company 162nd Howitzer Brigade.

I am trying to find out where these brigades served during the First World war and what action they were involved in.

Any help appreciated.

Am I right in assuming that your great uncle was William Grice, Shoeing Smith and Sergeant L/15762?

The L prefix denotes locally raised, similar to the infantry "Pals" battalions.

156, 162, 166 and 167 Brigades RFA, plus an Ammunition Column, were the "Camberwell Artillery", raised at Grove Vale, East Dulwich in early 1915. They were raised as the Divisional Artillery for 33rd Division. 167 Brigade was the Howitzer Brigade, but it was broken up in September 1916. Normal practice was for the constituent Batteries to be relocated within the remaining Brigades. I would guess therefore that your great uncle probably started in C Battery, 167 Brigade and then was posted to D Battery, 162 Brigade.

The war diary for all the brigades is held at Kew in WO 95/2413 and it includes the formation of 156 and 167 Brigades in Dulwich.

The easiest way to get an idea on the movements and major set pieces that your great uncle would have been involved in, is to look at the 33rd Division page on the Long Long Trail and follow it on from there:

Hopefully that will get you started.
