Virgin Media
« on: Tuesday 29 May 12 20:35 BST (UK) »
We have VirginMedia 10mb internet which works fine on the desktop PC which is wired but on my laptop -which is wireless I can't upload anything.
When I do a speed test the download speed is usually ok but the Upload speed  is timed out. Is there anything I can do for this. Its very frustrating not being able to upload any photos  or watch YouTube ect.
Thanks

Ready for technical questions?
Do you have a wireless router? (Is it a super hub, or two separate items)
O'k long time Virgin (cable) user.
Super hub not good.

There lies your problem, I will not swear but they are a load of rubbish ???
How far away from the SH is your laptop, as they have a very limited wireless range.
Some users have had to resort to connecting a separate router, and used the SH in 'modem mode'.
Could you do a speed test using one of the speedtest sites, report back on both download and upload.
(You should get @9.6/9.8Mb down and .8/.85Mb up.) - Possibly in morning, best conditions.
My guess is you are only getting 0.5Mb or less up.

I'm only about 6 or 7 ft away from the SH. I am usually only on the laptop in the evening which is probably the worst time but will try it in the morning.
I tried the speed test last night with the laptop on the computer desk - right next to the SH & it was still rubbish  >:(

Any chance you can connect your laptop to the SH with an Ethernet cable if you are that close?
Just out of interest how rubbish is rubbish with the speed test?

I don't have an SH but have had Virginmedia doubling the speed lately which has led to lots of instability in our connection, have they done similar things to yours?

Easy way to go is ring 151 (Virgin faults) soonest after 08.00am and say your SH wireless is broke.
There is supposed to be an update to correct the wireless limitation soon, but I would just put on your best speaking voice and see if you can charm an engineer to your house.
(Tea and chocolate biscuits optional) :o

Nb I do not have a SH, rely on separate modem/router. (Range 30 yards plus, as it should be.)

If you take up swebby suggestion, the SH has to be switched off/back on when changing computers.

I did try connecting via the ethernet cable last night & it worked fine but if I did it permanently the cable would have to be all across the living room (make that about 10 ft away) - which defeats the object  ???

I will try ringing Virgin & see what they say. Last time we had to call them out beause they hadnt connected the upstairs telephone they tried to charge us £99. We had to phone them up after that & complain before they cancelled it   ???
