DNA KIT to WHEATONs and possibly HANCOCK of North Devon
« on: Friday 01 June 12 22:17 BST (UK) »
I am looking for WHEATON males of Devon. Depending on your lineage I will make available FREE Y-DNA test kits of 12-37 markers a value of $99-$169 US.

We have at least 3 Wheaton/Wheadon lines in Devon and a perfect match with a Hancock of South Molton. Looking for other possible matches to the early Wheatons of Devon. We are looking for parentage of a Robert Wheaton born about 1605-1610 who immigrated to the colonies about 1636. Earliest Wheaton of record is in 1298.

Robert Wheaton may have had some relationship with Non-conformists. Or with Governor John Endicott who was the son of Thomas Endicott of Chagford, Devon. John was married in Chard and was part of the Dorchester Company who immigrated to Salem, Massachusetts.

Also interested in communicating with anyone with Wheaton ancestry particularly those of North Devon. Particular Parishes of interest:
South Molton,
Ifracombe
Tiverton
Ashreigney
Winkleigh
Lapford
Sandford
Okehampton
Crediton

It is not clear whether all Exeter Wheatons are of the Sidmouth line. Only way to sort them out is through DNA testing.

If you are a HANCOCK from North Devon please contact me.

Hi Kelly, There were members of the Wheaton and Hancocks families living in the village of Dolton in the 1940s, here is the name of one J.Wheaton on the bell dated 1921.

Bill.
Feel free to alter/modify or colour any restores done by me.

Bill,

Thanks for the terrific photo---Is it okay to post on my website? Its good to know they were still in the area relatively recently.

Steve,
Thanks for the advice---I'll give a try---although I haven't had much luck in getting newspapers to respond ;-) Emails from Crazy Americans go in the circular file.....

A bit of an update. We have established 4, probably 5 WHEATON / WHEADON lines in Devon and Somerset.

The WHEADON line is DNA related to the DEANs of Chard and Crewkerne areas of Somerset and Axminster of Devon.
There is a WHEATON line from Exeter. This may be the oldest reaching back to 1298.
There is a WHEATON line from Coldridge and surrounding parishes of Devon which goes back to the 1500's
There is a WHEATON line from Brixham, Devon. which were mariners.
There is a WHEATON line from the Sidmouth area.
And finally there is a Hancock from South Molton who matches with a large group of American Wheatons whose progenitor immigrated in the 1600's.

More information on progenitors here
https://sites.google.com/site/wheatonsurname/patriarchs

And DNA testing here.

I am happy to help where I can. This link to Wheatons in Devon may be helpful to you.
http://www.wheatonjk.co.uk/devon2.htm

If you know of a living male Wheaton in your family we can help establish which Wheaton line you connect to. The test prices have been lowered to $39 for a 12 marker test. Eventually if Ancestry.com opens up their autosomal test to the UK market it may also prove helpful for you in connecting not only with your Wheaton line but all of your lines.

There's tons of information on the earliest Wheatons on my website.
https://sites.google.com/site/wheatonsurname/wheaton-specific-resources/devon-wheatons
You are likely related to the earliest Wheaton who was Mayor of Exeter for many years.

You might also enjoy my article on the origins of the name
