McPherson - mid1800s *FOUND*
« on: Tuesday 05 June 12 14:35 BST (UK) »
I am trying to locate info on George McPherson. His HBC biographical sheet lists his birth year as 1840, while census' have it as 1841. So assuming he was born about 1841 in Tingwall Parish. He migrates to Canada in 1861/2 where he remained until his death at Churchill.

McPherson does not seem like a typical Shetlander name. I did find a Catherine (widow of James), her son Robert and her daughter Ursula . . . But am unable to find any connection to George.

I am even beginning to wonder if he was from elsewhere or changed his name at some point.  Considering naming traditions, his sons were Henry, Edward, James, Roderick, and Frederick.

Thanks for helping!

Hi DitzKnitz

Welcome to RootsChat.

Have you tried the Bayanne, Shetland genealogical site? It's brilliant!

 http://www.bayanne.co.uk/Genealogy/Gene.html

It's running slow for me today, so be patient when you're waiting for pages to pop up. It does have MANY McPhersons including a George born or christened abt 1843. He died York Factory, Manitoba 1907. Father/mother, children, work history etc are included in the info at the following link.

http://www.bayanne.info/Shetland/getperson.php?personID=I299293&tree=bayanne_1

Hopefully it will provide some leads for you. Good luck.

Hi.  I am a decendant of George McPherson that you posted about.  How can I help you?  And, how would you be connected to George?

George was my great-great grandfather, and Roderick was my great-grandfather.  As far as I know there was no name change, but I will ask my father.  He is the eldest surviving member or our family.  Do you have a connection to George?
