Brougham Street, Sunderland
« on: Tuesday 05 June 12 15:58 BST (UK) »
Does anyone know if there was a hospital or maternity hospital of some description in Brougham Street in Sunderland in 1929.

Mam seems to think that my father was born in a hospital in that street.  Does anyone have any information at all about the building.

Thanks

There was no hospital or maternity hospital in Brougham Street. The headquarters of the Sunderland District Nursing Association were at Victoria House (27 & 28) Murton Street. They provided a home nursing service, and supervised the maternity services.

After the maternity services came under the supervision of the District Nursing  Association one maternity ward was set aside at the Municipal Hospital, and there were also maternity cases at Mowbray Nursing Home.

Thanks Stan

I think it must have been Mowbray Nursing Home, because the name Mowbray was mentioned.

Thanks again

Sorry to bother you again.  Which streets were the Municipal Hospital and Mowbray Nursing Home in. Can't find anything on the net. Are there any sites with information about the buildings, old maps etc.
Thanks again.

The Municipal Hospital is now the Sunderland Royal Hospital. If you go to http://www.old-maps.co.uk/maps.html?coords=438000,556600 it will centre the map on the hospital, the present hospital has changed a lot, see http://goo.gl/maps/SqrN but you can see the original layout on the 1940 pre war map. The Mowbray Nursing Home was on Mowbray Terrace, on the north side of Mowbray Road, go to http://www.old-maps.co.uk/maps.html?coords=440125,556180, but I don't know which building it was. Unfortunately that side of the road has been redeveloped,  see http://goo.gl/maps/xdft

Thanks Stan

Brilliant as ever.

It must have been the Mowbray Nursing Home as Mowbray Terrace has been mentioned by various members of my family, although mother was convinced it was Brougham Street. (it definitely was not the Municipal Hospital  Sunderland General/Royal)).

I just wonder why he would have been born in such a small hospital when most births occurred at home.  Did they cater for any particular maternity needs or people?

Pity there are no old photos of the building.

Never mind.

Thanks again.

I know this is quite a while after your initial enquiry but I have been looking for a Maternity Home in Sunderland recently. My mother trained as a midwife there in the early 1930's.
Have found the address is 19-21 Mowbray Terrace. She wrote it was a 3 big old houses knocked into the nursing home and was closed around 1935/37 time as it was not really fit for purpose being on so many floors and without a lift.

You can see 19-21 Mowbray Terrace on the 1968-70 map at
https://www.old-maps.co.uk/#/Map/440074/556204/13/100765 No.19 is an Employment Exchange. You will have to change the zoom level using the - in the top left corner.
