Thomas Smeall and Lilias Mackay
« on: Saturday 09 June 12 05:54 BST (UK) »
Hi

Just wondering if anyone else is researching the above family - Thomas' surname  ??? could be spelt Smail or Smeaill or other variant and Lilias has also been recorded as Lillie Mackie.

They were married 7 May 1802 Aberdour, Fife, Scotland and their first three children were born in Dunfermline and fourth in Kirkcaldy.

I am particularly interested in Thomas' occupation as well as when and where he and Lillie died.

All I have been able to find so far is their children - James b. 1803; John b. 1804; Robert b. 1809 and Lilias b. 1816.

Any help greatly appreciated.

Smealls - Kirkcaldy, Scotland
Williamsonson - Dunfermline, Scotland
Della Vedova - Tirano and surrounding villages, Italy
Maganetti - Tirano, Italy

I can not see deaths for them on SP or find them in 1841.

There are a couple of possible births for Thomas on SP for Edinburgh

I too am part of this family and am a descendent of their son, Robert Smails (we have lots on him). For more than 2 years he was a dead end and we are thrilled to now be back one more generation with his parents. I think Lilias Mackie was born 8 Feb 1777 Dunfermline (bapt 16th) to parents John Mackie and Lilias Henderson married 2 April 1774 Dunfermline.

Please keep sharing the information you have.

Were Thomas or Lilias still alive in 1861 census?

What about 1841 census details?

Lilias' parents seem to have been John Mackie and Lilias Henderson of Dunfermline. Were they in the 1841 census or 1851?

I am a descendent of Robert Smails and Lillie Mackie's son Thomas who lived in New South Wales.  I have quite a bit on the Australian connection.  Have only just discovered Robert and Lillie.  Have been trying to find Roberts immigration to Tasmania.   Also Robert and Lillie's Marriage in Scotland.
Saw a post that marriage was May 7, 1802 in Fife, Scotland but am looking for documentation.
Maybe we could help each other.

The big breakthrough for us was the finding that Robert Smails went to gaol - we think for bankruptcy or not supporting his family. Good thing about a prison record is that it lists the ship he came out on and his home area - Fife.

Always worth checking the surnames of others on ship and I noted a family with surname of his wife (but not her). Worked to see if a family from Fife with those family members + a Margaret and found her. Not sure how to get you to contact me. Mixedupmob and I are in email contact and working together. The prison record has opened up the whole dead end that Robert Smails and Margaret Williamson were.
 Prison record: 1
Name:ROBERT SMAILS
Birth year: ABOUT 1810
Birth place: FIFESHIRE, SCOTLAND
Age: 51
Immigration Date: 1830
Vessel arrived in: DUNMORE
Date of admission: 12 APR 1861
Gaol: DARLINGHURST
Gaol location: DARLINGHURST, NEW SOUTH WALES

I have found that the Drummore left Leith in Scotland on 19 July 1830 and arrived in Hobart Town on 28 February 1831

Drummore (1831)
Departed Leith 19 Jul 1830 with 61 passengers arriving Hobart 28 Feb 1831.
