Hello - this is quite complicated - as it seems they "fibbed" about their ages???

Is this the marriage?
28 April 1879
St Thomas Stepney
John Rowe 21 bachelor occ Engineer 30(or80?) Exmouth St father John Rowe occ Blacksmith
Ellen Banks 21 spinster 16 George St father George Banks occ labourer
witnesses William Hay jane Rosker
all signed

then in 1881 census they are younger than when they married???

1881
Poplar
George banks Head W 62 Lab ship yard
Louisa Riley U 32 laundress
John Rowe M 20 lab in Ship Yard Devonport
Ellen Rowe M 19
Elizabeth A 6mth
RG11 511 106 46
I have found 2 other John Rowes b Devon with Father John who was a smith (they did have middle initials -but they aren't always used on marriage reg's

Hi Sandra

Is he John William Rowe that married Dec qtr 1879 Poplar -  who were the witnesses to the marriage.

ADDED that was the only Poplar reg dist marriage in 1879 - I presume from the other posts you could mean Mile End reg dist.  :-\

If he is John Rowe who married Ellen Banks then his y.o.b. is fairly consistent after marriage

1881 John age 20 b. Devonport occ lab in ship yard Ellen age 19 b.Poplar
1891 John age 30 b. Plymouth devon occ Greengrocer Ellen age 29 b Poplar
1901 John age 40 b.Plymouth Devon occ Boiler Yd lab
Ellen age 39 b Poplar

by 1911 Ellen was a widow

is this the correct family?

Hi Sandra

Is he John William Rowe that married Dec qtr 1879 Poplar -  who were the witnesses to the marriage.

I think the John William Rowe whose marriage was reg 1879 Poplar married mary Scott

If so John was 19 at time of marriage occ Leathercutter father George Rowe occ Stone mason

Best match I can find is the marriage to Ellen banks - in Stepney

???

Thanks Suz  ;D
It was the fact that the marriage was stated as Poplar that originally threw me.

Hi,

Unfortunately I think the John P ROWE found by groom could have died in 1862 :(

Birth
John Priest ROWE    Jun Q 1859     Stoke Damerel    5b  812

Christening
29 May 1859
Stoke Damerel
John Priest ROWE
Born:  07 April 1859
Father:John
Occupation:  Smith
Abode: Morice Town
Mother:Jane

Death
John Priest ROWE    Dec Q 1862     Stoke Damerel    5b  247

I think the John you found in 1861 with parents John and Elizabeth could be the right one, being a Greenwich Pensioner doesn't mean that he wasn't also a Smith. There is a daughter Betsy living with them, this looks like her baptism,

Betsy ROWE
Born:  22 Sept 1858
Christened:  31 Oct 1858,  Stoke Damerel
Father: John
Occupation: Pensioner
Abode:  Devonport
Mother: Elizabeth

and then John's?

John ROWE
Born:  01 Aug 1860
Christened:  26 Aug 1860,  Stoke Damerel
Father: John
Occupation: Smith
Abode:  Devonport
Mother: Elizabeth

In 1871 Betsey is living as neice to James and Lydia MURREY  RG10/2114  f.61  p.6  I can't find the rest of the family :(

Regards,
Daisy

I think we have to wait for reflector coming back on line to be certain we are looking at the correct marriage??
