Thank you for that.  It seems that no-one on Ancestry trees has found them in the 1871 either.  It could be the pages are missing in either Glamorganshire or Monmouthshire.  I think it will remain a mystery!

Thank you for that I will look into a possible Workhouse connection.  But I haven't come across a son - Evan.  If charles fits maybe a big search for Ann Coombs will come up with something!

hi - have just had another browse and I think that the Charlotte Coombs shown as their daughter is really a daughter in law and married to James; this is noted on one of the trees in ancestry where he marries a Charlotte Wells.  have had a look at the 1881 census and Charlotte Wells is living next door to George Coombs in Llandaff, Cardiff.  Charlotte Coombs appears to have died in 1901 and it would appear from the 1911 census that James remarried in 1902.

Sorry not allowed to post details but quite easy to find if you enter James Coombs b 1866 in Newport into the search.

Wow Nesta, that is great!  I have emailed them in the hope that they may have more info from somewhere.  If they are making their censuses available then they may know what is missing.  She says hopefully.

Thank you Willcoxon it looks as though we may have cracked it.  I think they were in Canton, Cardiff in 1871.
