I'm puzzled by that 1861 census - right ages and birthplaces and I can't find another family on other censuses, but why would Joan be Sarah and John suddenly a Greenwich pensioner ???  Mind you I do have a Letty who appears as Sally one census so could be bad writing on the original household schedule, still leaves the Greenwich Pensioner bit though.

Jan ;)

That's what threw me about the 1861 census, but it does now look as if it is the correct family, as it fits with the POB for Elizabeth in 1871. Strange about the change of occupation and name.

How exciting to have someone who was transported to Australia. The tree on Ancestry has Robert Saunders life in Australia well sourced.

Hi All,
The family tree on Ancestry you speak of is possibly mine. I am more than happy to be contacted by anyone else who is researching this family. My husband is a direct descendant of Robert Saunders who was transported to VDL.
