Hullo again, I believe I have found the correct Henry Masters in the at an Academy or School in Warwickshire at age 12 and it has his place of birth as born overseas British Subject.

I wonder if records exist for his arrival in England?

Hi to both, Thanks for that marriage info Marg, that is invaluable material. Now his father George, what a progression ;D.

I must have made a mistake in taking down the info, I had looked at so many in Warwickshire.

Shaun, do you think that is an actual name or a mistranscription? I can understand puting in an R or taking it out. I suppose it could be a mistaken S?

Where's Rickmansworth? Gee I dont even know where West Derby is? I better get out MR Google Earth!

Thanks to both for your help.

The school in Rickmansworth was Basing House - see http://www.trmt.org.uk/research-edu/historic-buildings/rickmansworth-2/

NB as I said before, I do think the West Indies references in the 1861 census are a red herring... a false trail.

He was born Warwick or Warwickshire in every other census we've found him in: 1851, 1871, 1881, 1891, and 1901.

Hi Shaun, Yes I think your right. Too easy to get distracted. ::) There seems to be a few Henry's born around that period. It is a big gain getting this information particularly the marraige and parents.

I would like to thank you all for your interest, experience and time. ;D

Hi from Oz, I need some help establishing a birth and residence of the above.

I have found a Henry Masters on the 1881 Census living in West Bromwich with a birth in 1828 at Warwick? I dont know if that is in Warwickshire but am guessing? My Great Grandfather was William Henry Masters b circa 1855 he married in UK to Louisa Messenger at Plymouth had a daughter Ellen c1880 then emmigrated to Australia where they had several more.

Hi Neil,

I spent several years searching in Warwickshire and Yorkshire for my Gt Grandfather. He was born in Yorkshire in 1847, and since there were not many Masters in Yorkshire at that time, I searched through a lot of the neighbouring counties. I finally found him - he was registered with a different surname - long story.  Anyway I always like a good mystery and when I saw the post, I thought I would spend a few minutes looking. My Masters family have used all the name variations - Masters, Marsters, Matters!

I ordered the birth certificate on spec and that was how I found him, because both the others maiden name, and married name were listed. Although I never found the 3rd marriage, he eventually went back to the Masters name.  My advice would be to order a certificate or two. You will verify that you are on the right track or not.

I also looked at several parish records but that is only easy if the places are small. You might be able to find the baptism for William Henry since you know where they lived in 1861 and he was born about 1858.  You may get lucky
