Margaret Scanlan nee Gilpin
« on: Monday 18 June 12 08:42 BST (UK) »
Hi  I wonder if anyone can help me find this lady's marriage to Scanlan, no first name known.  I would also like to know when Scanlan died.  She married as a widow in Partick to W J Bulla and was 37 in 1894 so dob around 1857.  Parents John Gilpin and Letitia Gilpin nee Mc Cormick.

Thanks, Adrienne.

Hi Adrienne,

I could not find previous message to Scanl*n, in the timescales, a Margaret Gilpin married a William Weir in High Church,Glasgow,Lanark,Scotland on 05 Sep 1873. Margaret would have been 15/16 at that time.

I checked on FreeBMD and could not find any Scanl*n marriages to Gilpin.

Hi Adrienne

Where was Margaret born? This might help in finding her in the earlier censuses under Gilpin or Scanlan (and variants). Have you found her on the 1901 census? If so, any children showing from the Scanlan marriage?

Monica  :)

Thanks Tom and Monica.  The only places I know connected with Margaret is Partick and Belfast.  She had a son two months after her marriage to William Buller in Partick and they moved to Belfast sometime later.

Doesn't help with who Margaret married first but could this be mother in 1911:

Certainly could be Monica!  It's not a common name.  Maybe she came over to Ireland with Margaret and William and their son.  Maybe she was originally from Ireland even.

I wonder where Scanlan went.  Would she have married him using a previous married name (Weir) if that was her at 15/16?   I want to find out if her husband Scanlan was father of her baby or whether William Buller was.  Also I want to know if she had any siblings so that the line didn't end with her.  Her son was killed in WW!.

Thanks a lot Monica

The Letitia Gilpin from 1911 shows as born in Co. Armagh www.census.nationalarchives.ie/reels/nai001522500/ as did Margaret Gilpin/buller in her 1911 entry. Can't see any trace of a Letitia Gilpin in the earlier Scottish census so maybe she never left Ireland?

With likely Irish (Belfast?) connections, might be worth putting a post with a link to this one on the Antrim board here on RC so that people can try to help with better experiece of resources there. You might be able to make some headway of possible siblings for Margaret.

Bare in mind also that the Scanlan marriage may also have been in Ireland and not in Scotland.

Where is your connection to the family?

The census gives Letitia's place of birth as Co Armagh

The marriage to Weir has the mother's maiden name as Agnes Wilson and the father as John Gilpin

Hi Sancti  :)

Just added a bit to my last post. Agree with the mention of Letitia being born in Co Armagh. It may just be Margaret that came over to Scotland or perhaps other siblings came over to work?
