William & Thamar Davies
« on: Monday 18 June 12 19:49 BST (UK) »
On the 1891 census (which I read) for Blaenllechau in the Rhondda, the above were registered along with children Gwilym; Mary Ann; Emma Hannah; Rachel and a Hannah Davies who was 77 at the time of the census. William came from Llandyfaelog and Thamar from St Clears, and were 43 and 39 at the time of the census.  William and Thamar were also on the 1881 census.
Where were these two on the 1871 census in Carmarthen, was Hannah Davies the mother of William?  Gwilym could have been born in Carmarthen as his age on the 1891 census is 18?
Any help would be appreciated.

Possible marriage...

DAVIES William
DAVIES Tamar

If this is the right couple, then Hannah DAVIES could be the mother of either of them

On the 1891 census you quote (RG12, 4412, 21, 42), Hannah is described as "Mother" and not "Mother-in-Law".

Also, William is clearly stated to be born in Carmarthen, while Gwilym is sted to be born Ystradfodorg.

Many thanks for the information. I take it there was no marriage for these two IN Carmarthen/St Clears prior to them moving to the Rhondda. It looks like they must have moved after the 1871 census as Gwilym is 9 years old on 1881 one, which means all the four children were born in Blaenllechau/Ystradyfodwg.
On the 1891 census, it stated that Hannah Davies came from St Clears as did Tamar, yet William Davies I was told came from Llandyfaelog.
My interest is now the 1861 & 1871 census for St Clears & Llandyfaelog which could help to go back a bit further.
Again many thanks.

This could be Thamar at Llanllwydfach, Llanfihangel Abercowin, in 1851:

Amy Davies Head Widow age 63 Pauper
Anna Davies Dau Unmar age 38 Pauper
Daniel Davies Step Son age 10
Tamer Davies Step Dau age 5 born Llanfihangel Abercowin, Carmarthenshire
Eliza Left Step Dau age 4

All born Llanfihangel Abercowin, Carmarthenshire

Birth of Thamar David in 1846 (Dec quarter)
Carmarthen volume 26 page 549

If you decide to send for the certificate, specify Llanfihangel Abercowin or St Clears as likely Parishes.

.... Hannah Davies who was 77 at the time of the census. William came from Llandyfaelog and Thamar from St Clears...

Hannah Davies has birth place of St Clears on 1891, the same as Thamar, but William's birthplace is just Carmarthenshire. Where did you find his birthplace of Llandyfaelog please? Added: found on 1901 - RG13 Piece 5001 Folio 18 Page 28.

Although on 1891 Hannah is given as Mother, she could be Thamar's Mother - same person as Anna in 1851?
