Richard Cody- looking for his birth.
« on: Thursday 21 June 12 18:40 BST (UK) »
Hello everyone.

I am searching for the birth of my 3xgtgranddad Richard Cody for about 1798/1804 in and around Kilkelly.
He eventually ends up in London as I have him in 1838 living in Wandsworth Road with Margaret(Hayes) who I take to be his wife.

What I'm wondering is wether Kilkelly was misheard by a transcriber for Kilkenny(County) as I know the Cody name is strong down there.

Today I have learned that there is a Kilkenny in South Mayo.

Any help in this matter is greatly appreciated.

Cheers Roger.

There's a town in Co. Mayo named Kilkelly, located in Kilmovee Civil Parish, near Swineford.

There's also a townland named Kilkenny in Breaghwy civil parish, near to Castlebar.

Do you know what denomination your Cody family were ?

Hi there Shane,

Unfortunately I don't know the religion, what I do know is that sometime during the 1800's they were definitely Church of England, around the 1860 mark.

I have a feeling that whilst over in Ireland they were Roman Catholics.

What mystifies me is what is a Townland as opposed to a Town.

Cheers Roger.

A town is a population centre, a townland is the smallest sub-division of land. Some townlands contain towns, or villages but many do not. There are about 64,000 townlands.

Simplified a little - in decreasing order of size we have :

  County
  Barony
  Civil parish
  Townland

Hi there Shane,

Since I replied to you last I have had word back from the South Mayo Genealogy people.

They are saying that there were not any Cody's in Kilkelly, but in the middle of the 19th century there were Cuddys.

Seeing as my branch of the Cody's where in London by then I think I can rule them out.

Thank you for your easy to understand terms of population or land divisions.

It looks like now I will have to try Kilkenny(County).

Thank you for your help.

Cheers Roger.

What's your source for the 'Kilkelly' reference ?

It's possible that the records dont go back far enough in the area to show any records for Codys. Few rural RC parishes have records before 1830..

e.g. Kilmovee RC records only go back to 1854 for baptisms

Hi there Shane,

I will have to come back to you tomorrow on that as I will have to get my files out and our house is upside down at the moment, with home improvements.

Cheers Roger.

Hi there Shane,

Sorry for the delay, my sources are 1841 English Census it says, Richard Cody 35, year of birth 1806 where born Ireland.

1851 English census it says, Richard Cody 46, year of birth 1805, Gardener, where born, Ireland Kelkelly.

I have printed these off, but I have to be carefull due to copyright issues.

I hope this helps.

Cheers Roger.

The problem is not only the very early date, but also the uncertainty about the location. Even you found some Cody matches, I'm not sure there would be any way to either confirm or rule these out without further clues... e.g. a father's name, or names of a sibling or two, or some way to find a more certain place of birth...

Have you located Richard on the 1861 census, or found any other Cody households in the area that might be relations ?
