newspaper archives for londonderry
« on: Friday 22 June 12 12:51 BST (UK) »
My mam signed up with the public library of northern ireland and i use her details to log onto the website etc.  However, she was told that i would be able to search old newspaper archives ie derry journal etc from years back but i can only seem to find ones dating back to the 1990s.

Does anyone know how to search old newspaper archives on the ni libraries website (mainly derry ones as far back as they allow), or is there another way of doing this?  I have emailed the guy at the library she signed up to and he cannot understand why i cannot access them.  Is there something i am not doing right...?

I cannot go to places in person as i currently do not live in ireland.

It's quite possible you cannot access the online resources because you are not in Ireland and these resources are for people resident in N.I. Their website lists several online collections but I don't see the Derry Journal listed.

The guy who works for the library knows I'm in Scotland but is under the impression I should be able to view old archived newspapers.

Would I be right in thinking the only other way of viewing archived newspapers for northern Ireland would be in person ie in Ireland and not online. Shame if that is the case...

I did, thank you for the link. It allows you look at the Belfast telegraph, Irish times etc but they are from the 1990s onwards.

I was wondering if there were archives of older newspapers ie pre 1950?

Or am I being incredibly stupid and not seeing the tree for the forest, if so Im really sorry  :)

What's on the list is what is available and I don't even see the Derry Journal listed.

Unfortunately the Libraries NI website is very poorly designed and doesn't show holdings of newspapers for any library.

No, I didn't either. He told my mother I could view really old archived newspapers, including the derry journal. I thought I was going a bit barmy as I have been all over the site and cannot find either really old newspapers or the derry journal.

I think the lad has obviously made a mistake. That's too bad. Ah well  ::) ::)

Thanks for your help aghadowey.

It appears that Magee University has the Derry Journal back to 1772 as well as other titles such as Londonderry Sentinel, Londonderry Guardian and Londonderry Standard on microfilm but that doesn't help  solve the on line access issue.

i think that the central Library in Derry has copies of the Derry Journal but they are not on line you have to go to the library to see them. I hope to call in next week so i might be able to update you on that/
