Whalley Square, Preston
« on: Sunday 24 June 12 20:44 BST (UK) »
My Webster family lived from around 1841 to 1891 on Whalley Square.  I have tried to locate this street on an 1850 Map of Preston and on current ones.  I have been able to locate most of the addresses at which my family members resided.  Except Whalley Square.
I have found the new Whalley Road.   I did look on some old Census records for the District and other streets on the same pages, but no joy.
Anyone have any clues or ideas?

I have just read a PDF file that said Whalley Square-Marsh Lane, the latter of course in the middle of Preston between Guild Way and Ring Way and leading to Corporation Street.....also mention of Back Whalley Square.

Well!  Between the 1850 map and the current town centre map on the Preston website I have a better idea of where it should be.  It is not far from where I figured it should be from the old census report, new Bridge Lane.  I think I was on the wrong side of the tracks.
Thank you so very much!

My 1909 map of West Preston has Whalley Square as a turning off Marsh Lane between Gildow and Gradwell streets - opposite the Kay Street Mills. It would seem to be a small street with approximately 15 dwellings marked - 7 on one side - 3 across the top and then 5 down the other side. Just past Gradwell Street are the railway lines going into Preston Station. Gildow and Gradwell streets are still there, but not Whalley Square.

Thank you very much!
On my 1850 map I can find all these streets.  And it makes sense relative  to other locations where the family lived during the period and after.   Funny that the 1850 map I have does not have a name on the street.  It is there, but looks like an open space rather than a street, and no name affixed.

Again, thanks all.

Hi LindaWW. It would appear we share a distant ancestor. My Great, Great Grandfather Samuel Leigh married Rachel Webster the daughter of Henry Webster of Whalley Square Preston in 1849.

Sorry for forgetting about the e-mail rule.   I do not use this site as often as I should.

My great grandfather was the brother to your Rachel.   When he and his wife Ann died in 1884-1885 the children were taken into care by what is not the Together Trust and my grandfather, Richard, ended up in Canada as a Home Child.
