This is going off at a bit of a tangent, but a lot of Ayrshire names including Chalmers and Jelly are found in the County Down, which was heavily settled by Scottish immigrants in the 1600s. Many, probably most of them, came from Ayrshire and elsewhere in the west of Scotland.

I had an ancestor called Elizabeth Chalmers there and I'm pretty sure she was the Elizabeth born in 1705 at Drumbo, near Lisburn, to a Robert Chalmers and his unnamed wife. The name Jelly is found in some of the nearby town lands.

I'm grateful for this thread as it gives me some hints about where some of my Ulster ancestors may have come from (as a native of Fife, I'm not weel acquent with Ayrshire!).
