Fairground and Circus Newsomes
« on: Wednesday 04 July 12 01:44 BST (UK) »
Hi Everyone, I'm new to Rootschat and this is my first thread. I am a direct descendant of Timothy Newsome Lion Tamer and James Newsome Circus Proprietor. I have researched my family tree and have almost completed it. I note other members believe they may be descendants as well, I would like to hear from you directly if you if this is the case as I may be able to help.

Regards
NEWSOME FAMILY OF FAIRGROUND AND CIRCUS TRAVELLERS. I AM A DECENDANT OF THE FAMOUS TIMOTHY NEWSOME LION TAMER AND JAMES NEWSOME CIRCUS PROPRIETOR. I HAVE COMPLETED THE FAMILY TREE IF ANYONE WOULD LIKE TO CONTACT ME. I AM INTERESTED IN ANY INFO THAT CAN BE SUPPLIED ON FAIRGROUND AND CIRCUS FAMILIES IN GENERAL AS MY FAMILY MARRIED INTO OTHER FAIRGROUND AND CIRCUS FAMILIES.

Hi

I have just joined RootsChat and read your post.

My dad told me that I was also a descendant of Timothy Newsome, lion tamer. My grandfather and great grandfather, James Arthur Newsome owned the traction engine, The Rover. They both had travelling fairgrounds and a static fairground in Feethams, Darlington, and also at Saltburn. It would seem that I may be related to your family?

Look forward to hearing from you.

Regards

Hello Rover 1913,
my father was Francis Newsome, my grandfather was Timothy Newsome. He married a cousin  called Lauretta Newsome who had a brother Arthur Newsome who owned the Rover. You are a descendant and therefore related to me. My tree starts with Christopher Newsome who had three sons. William, James amd Timothy. James never had any son's only a load of daughters. Timothy was the lion tamer and you descend from him. William his brother is where I descend from.

Anyway glad you have contacted me and hope to hear from you shortly

Best regards

Few pictures you might be interested in:

Not sure if the one below is Burrell 3471 "The Rover" or 3450 "Always ready". It was taken at Barnards Castle.

Not sure where or when this picture was taken.

This one was taken at Stapleford Rally in 2005.

The Rover still survives & is owned by a chap called Bill Hunt

Hi

Many thanks for posting the photographs...they are great! Not sure if the first engine is Always Ready as it looks different to the photo's I have. It also has different wheels to the Rover so I am not sure which engine it is. Peter may know. My great granddad was Arthur 'Pop' Newsome and he owned The Rover and Always Ready. I think he passed The Rover on to my granddad James Waddell Newsome, because I remember it at the funfair at Feethams in Darlington. I used to work on the funfair when I was a lad. What connection do you have to the family?

Oh, I still have the original very first log book of The Rover.

Regards

I have no connection with the family. I'm a steam enthusiast so put in traction engine in the search to see what would come up. I knew that The Rover has survived into preservation so thought I would share the pictures of her.

Wouldn't mind seeing the engine pictures you have if you're willing/able to post them
