McIan's Johnsons
« on: Monday 23 May 05 13:16 BST (UK) »
Hi Any info on the Johnsons and McIans from Isle of Coll and Ardnamurchan.

I think they were part of the Mcdonald Clan, any general history and amazing facts would be appreciated.

Thanks

RedBull :) :) :)

Red Bull - This is your lucky day. I descend from the Johnston family of Coll who in turn descend from the MacIain MacDonald's of Ardnamurchan. I have been researching this family for the last decade. Email me and I will share what I have.

Hello to you both,

My family name is McKean from the Edinburgh area.  According to family oral history, my family are descendants of the MacIains' of Glencoe.  My brother's Y-DNA 37 Marker results are of the same signature as Somerled, and he has close matches to quite a few MacDonald men.

I would be interested to know more about your Johnston and MacIain/MacDonald family.

Regards,

Maggie

Maggie - Nice to meet you. Please email me at my home address. I too have my 37 markers. I have been identified as R1b as opposed to Somerleds descendents who are R1a. You must remember that the claim of Somerleds descendents are R1a does not preclude me from being a MacIain. However, if you can connect to Coll we are most likely linked or related. I reall want to hear from you.

Greetings Brian & Maggie,
I am a descendant of the Johnstons from Islay and did a lot of my research about 20 years ago and picked it up a few days with a query and have been at it pretty solidly since.
My line is as follows
Ronald Johnston to
son Duncan married to Catherine McIntyre.
Son Angus Johnston m Mary Campbell (He died in Glasgow in 1869 and she died Queanbeyan, NSW, Australia)
son John Johnston married Maria Bridget Flanagan in New Zealand and died in Sydney, Australia.
Angus was a distiller but I am still trying to confirm where that was. Might have been Tallant Distillery.
I hope this is helpful. It would be great to hear from you.
Best wishes,
Rowena
