CRITCHELL / TIZ(Z)ARD / JOLLIFFE / GURD - Upway / Radipole / Portesham
« on: Saturday 14 July 12 14:00 BST (UK) »
Hello Listers !

I'm looking for connections or further info relating to Unity CRITCHELL (B 1838) and her family , from of Upwey / Radipole Dorset .

Her parents were John Churchouse CRITCHELL (B abt 1815) and Ann TIZ(Z)ARD (B abt 1808) .

I've recently discovered that Ann had been previously married to John JOLLIFFE (m Feb 1829) but he sadly died before the end of the same year !
I hear there may have been a child born to widowed Ann early in 1830 , but have found no eveidence yet .

Ann died in abt 1877 and John critchell re-married to Prudence GURD abt 1879 .
John died 1895 but Prudence lived on beyond the 1911 census .

I'd like to hear from anyone with connections to any of these people and especially if anyone knows the circumstances of John Jolliffe's untimely death at only 22 .

Thanks

Andy

Sadly there were lots of untimely deaths in those days so you may never find out what happened.

If they did have a son John he and mother should hopefully be on 1841 census somewhere.

John married Rosina Prowse 6 Nov 1854 Fordington Dorset.  Marriage record doesn't say father deceased but that wasn't unusual.  Her father Henry Prowse labourer.

Further census records show children

Unity
John
Robert

1891 John is widower
1901 living with daugher Unity and her family.  She had 11 children married Charles Blandamer 1883.
John still alive at 80.  Possible death in 1914 aged 84.

Incidentally there is a Louisa Tizard aged 1 on the same burial register as John Jolliffe senior.
She was buried 27 Nov 1829 and John 31 Dec 1829.

Thanks again , Milli' !

I had most of the Unity stuff - her tale is quite a sad one .
(Radipole is an area of Weymouth , by the way)
There was another daughter (Florence) but she and Eva both died from Mumps within a couple of days of each other in 1880 , aged only 7 & 10 .
All of the older children had moved out and married etc  by the time Samuel died. They obviously lost the farm and their home . She kept Helena and another younger daughter (Ethel) with her and moved to Toxteth but put Annie in an Orphanage in Birmingham.
I have her papers from the orphanage - She was admitted with Unity's ".. full approval and consent ..." and she had pledged ".. not to interfere with her in anyway while therein.."  , declaring herself ".. quite unable to maintain her family.." . "
Annie was in good health and of average intelligence. She went into domestic service in her early teens , married , had at least 5 children and lived to a good age .
So hopefully a happy-ish ending . Unity , I believe , died in Bradford 1909 .
