Ah, got it now!

I think it says "Stg. hardware" i.e. Stealing hardware.

(Was that the bit you couldn't read?)

The boy above him was called Richard Pilchford - is this the Robert Pickering you were talking about?  I'm still a little confused.

And I think the ship was the Heroine.

Thank you so much Whipby, yes the other chap was Richard Pitchford, cannot find anything on him either, it looks from the record as if they were convicted together.  Think I found a previous conviction for Pitchford, he was whipped!!

So no further forward in finding parents for William Webster, will follow up Joseph and Elizabeth as you suggested......

KarenLee where did you find the Certificate of Freedom please?

Again thank you both for your help

Hi again - I read Richard's surname as Pilchford - try looking for that when you're searching.  But it could be Pitchford without the T being crossed in error.

Glad to have helped a bit - good luck!

Thanks Ladyhawk, yes have the marriage for William to Ann Toner but didnt have the details that St Marys was a Catholic Church, thought it was C of E, if you see what I mean.  Ann Toner came from Armagh, Ireland, so guess that is the Catholic connection.

Also the fact that William was born in Selby narrows down things a bit, will have another look.  Yes I discounted the William Henry Webster, but glad for any leads, thought if I found anything on Richard Pitchford it might help too.

Imagine being convicted at 13 years of age and transported 18 months later....
