Thomas Trollip - Horningsham, Wiltshire
« on: Tuesday 17 July 12 21:16 BST (UK) »
Hi, we have traced our family line back to Thomas Trollip (Trollop), my GGGGGG Father, who married Honor Carpenter on 25 June 1759 at St John the Baptist Church in Horningsham.  However, we haven't been able to go any further back. We would love to know who Thomas Trollip's parents were. All we know is that Thomas was born before 1740.  Can anyone help with this enquiry?
Any info gratefully received!
Many thanks
G

Thank you so much for looking, it is much appreciated.

I have contacted Wiltshire and Swindon Archives and found that they hold the marriage record.  Unfortunately the witnesses to the marriage were not family, which makes me think that Thomas' parents may not even have lived in Horningsham and that Thomas settled there looking for work. I am only guessing.  My next step is to visit the archives and try and find Thomas' baptism record - although this is really a shot in the dark as I suspect he may not have been born in the area.

It is interesting to note that you have found Honor with the spelling of Trolip, as this is what was on the marriage records too. Not sure how it changed in only one generation to Trollop. Another mystery!

Many thanks again.

I can find a lot of 'Trollip' and 'Trollop' going forward from Honor and Thomas but nothing going back.  The records that I have access to start in 1787 so a little late for any children to Thomas & Honor if they married in 1759, but you may already have the details of their children etc.,  I was just going to have a search again using 'Trolip' and see what I can come up with  ;)  I notice that there a number of later Honor Trollop's and Trollips.. so obviously the family settled in Horningsham.

Hi, yes I have quite a substantial family tree stemming from Thomas and Honor.  The family, which was quite prolific,  stayed in the area for over a century until my Great Grandfather married a welsh lass called Sarah Harris and they settled in south Wales.  My Grandfather then moved to London as a young man and that is where my father was born.

Thank you so much again for your help.

Ahh.. this is interesting...  the Trolip family may have been in the locality for a time before that too... the burial of 89 year old William Trolip on 14 September 1810 again from the Registers of the Independant Chapel in Horningsham.   This gives William a birth date of 1721. An elder brother for Thomas maybe?

Oooh, that gives me something to go on now - fingers crossed it leads to the parents. If I can find the baptism records for William Trolip in the Archives that would be great.

Thinking about it some more, it is not inconceivable that William could be Thomas' father as he would have been 38 at the time of Thomas' marriage and Thomas could have married at 18/19? A possibility?

Fab!

Great I hope it helps... Of course you should also look at the villages/towns near to Horningsham.. Corsley, Chapmanslade, Warminster which are in Wiltshire and then Frome which is Somerset, it is just on the boarder.  Try googling Longleat Estate and Trollope or Trolip  (and variations) ... etc., and you may comeup with something there as well.  Trollope is a well known local name throughout the villages here.

Good luck with your research ..

Ps.. there are a number of burials 1809-1810 and written against one of the Trollip entries is "died of typhed fever"
