John Davidson baptised 1764 in Marnoch
« on: Friday 20 July 12 11:42 BST (UK) »
Hoping for advice on how to clarify the parishes within Banffshire 1730-1770 and then identify the parents of John Davidson.
John Davidson was a seaman/mariner the birth/death details are from the MI records,
I found the gravestone earlier this month but it had fallen face down.

John Davidson was a native of Marnoch Banffshire and baptised 16 July 1764 - according to the MI.
He married Kathrine Conn from Stranraer 30th Jan 1787
He died 16 July 1848 and is buried in the old Church in Stranraer - unable to find any d record.
The 1841 Census for Stranraer, Princess St, records John b 1767 outside of parish with Cathrine from Stranraer.
I have all these family records 1841-1911

The issue being when I search for a John Davidson from Marnoch several possible John Davidson arise:

b 6 May 1763 Parish Cullen Banff / f James D /m Marg Taylor -
b  8 March 1764 Parish Keith Banff/ f John D/m Elspet Sutherland
b 10 March 1766 Parish Gamrie & Macduff Banff/ f William D/m Isabel Rainie
b 23 Jan 1767 Marnock Banff / f Alexr D/m Mart Rictchie
b 10 July 1770 Cullen Banff/ f Alexr D / m Jean Brown

The closest match being 8 March 1764 but which of these possibles would the forum select ?

First of all, it's Marnoch, not Marnock - you might find you get better results using the 'h'  when searching;)

You can find out about the parishes in Banffshire at http://www.abdnet.co.uk/genuki/BAN/

As to the list of 'possibles' - it may be that none of them is your one - it's not unusual for people to be missing from the records altogether. They may not have been baptised, or the baptism may not have been recorded, or the record may not have survived, for whatever reasons.

Can you get any clues from the names of his children?
Never trust anything you find online (especially submitted trees and transcriptions on Ancestry, MyHeritage, FindMyPast and other commercial web sites) unless it's an image of an original document - and even then be wary because errors can and do occur.

This link shows you the map for the parish of Marnoch:

http://www.rootschat.com/links/0pqg/

It was a parish from the 16th Century until 1975.  Keith Banff and Cullen are some distance away, personally I'd start my search with the one who was born in the Parish...  Then spread out after that.  Given the local transport links, my second choice would be Banff, third choice Cullen and lastly Keith.  Probably completely wrong!   ;D

Good luck.   :)

1pds, thanks for the link.
We are planning a trip to the area later in the year so it will help with the search.

I live about 10-miles from Marnoch, if you need any help with MI look-ups etc please don't hesitate to send a PM.   :)

If you look at Family Search there are ONLY three Davidsons Parents and five entries in the Marnoch Records for around 1760-1770 so it may be of value for you to study each of these families to see if anything fits in with what you already know.  It works SOMETIMES for me!  In my experience the Marnoch Records are good so the Old Parish Tape of what was written at the time is worth a look -  it could be a spelling problem.  Your Local Family History Society may have a copy.  The other thing about Marnoch is they had one or two minority churches as well.  If a flavour of Marnoch Parish in those times would help the New Statistical Account of Scotland Vol XIII is in *.PDF format on the internet.  Google for it!.  It is a BIG File and Marnoch starts at about page 401.  No it is not a dry read by any means so do not be put off by the Statistical Account bit.
Good luck with your search and do not give up on it,  nw_whiskers.

Here's my update :
Using Free reg managed to ID John Davidson b Marnoch 1764, entry records
Baptism date 16th July 1764, Father William Davidson, mother Janet Webster.
Abode - Monnedy : Witness John Webster & John Davidson the fathers ?.

Using ScotsPeople then ID their banns 27/08/1754 at Inverkeithy  - just 4miles from Marnoch.
William & Janet married 3rd September 1754,
Then found Janet b 13/10/1727 at Marnoch - she was a twin brother William.
Father John Webster on Janet's baptism records abode Knockforth.

Still having an issue with either William/Janet death in Banffshire, also unable to locate a John Davidsonb m or d with a son William b about 1725.
Any other suggestions?

Given the local transport links, my second choice would be Banff, third choice Cullen and lastly Keith.

I think I'd put Huntly in there somewhere - it's also quite close.
