I wonder who William Calder in the workhouse is?  He's definitely not my William Calder, as he and his soon to be wife Lucy Shipton came to New Zealand prior to 1876, after William had spent some a couple of years as a warden at a college in Honolulu.  My William Calder died on 10 August 1923 and is buried in Purewa Cemetery, in Auckland, New Zealand.

The names you've given for his father Frederick's siblings ring true, and have solved the mystery for me of why one of William and Lucy's children had the name Gillies as a middle name - Gillies obviously being the name of one of William's uncles! Many thanks, once again!! :)

Hi,

I have information about Frederick William Calder, born abt 1844 son of Frederick Calder & Jane Appleyard.  Various
census state he was born Birmingham, he married Sarah Walker 23rd November 1870 Staveley Derbyshire she was the daughter of John Walker and born abt 1844 Totley, Derbyshire.  Frederick W. Calder was a Solicitor he died 27th April 1884, leaving his wife Sarah with the following children:-

Mary Agnes   1871 Stone, Staffordshire. Known as Miss Poly, died 1914.
Jane Appleyard   1873 Stone Staffs, 1889  became governess to Royal Court of Hapsburg, Vienna. Died 1903 aged 32.
Florence Sousloff  1876 Derby *
Lucy  Hamilton  1877 Derby ( only daughter to marry)
Nellie   1879 Derby Died aged 19 December Q 1897 Belper
Margaret Campbell  1880. Died 1943

*Miss Florence, was my wonderful teacher.  The Strutt family of Belper offering Bridge House, (now demolished) to
Mrs Sarah Calder at a very small rent, to start a "Dame School" after the death of her husband.  Can you believe that
someone born 1876 did not retire until 1952!

There is a book "Miss Calder's Children" by Narvel S. Annable, which tells the story of the school and the Calder
family perhaps of more interest to yourself is that it contains photos of the house, school and some members of
the Calder family.

There are often copies of the book for sale on e-bay:-

Do send me a pm if you have problems obtaining the book.

Wow, what a coincidence - thank you so much for that information! Coincidentally I was contacted last year by someone who said that a brooch belonging to Florence had been left to a lady's mother, and it turned up at the Antique's Roadshow being worth a pretty penny - I'll track down the link so you can see.

I can't believe I haven't posted here earlier - you people are amazing!   :D
