Help with information on the Genghis Khan Passenger Ship 19th century
« on: Wednesday 25 July 12 17:53 BST (UK) »
Hi All, I have been looking around online for information on the voyages of the ship the Genghis Khan out of Waterford in the early 1860's I can only find one reference to her on a  bad journey to New South Wales in 1853 and then I have my ancestor john Hill on board her at Dover in Kent as a steward in 1861 on the UK census, any pointers for where to get more information on her would be great, I found where she was built but nothing on her voyages or when she was scrapped? thanks

GENGHIS KHAN official number 24685
I cannot find anything on this vessel after 1864 either in Lloyds register, the Mercantile Navy list or the newspapers of the day. However  there are crew agreements up until 1866 for a vessel with this O/N. My guess is she had a change of name sometime after 1864.
It would appear that her 1861 crew agreements have been lost or destroyed together with her registration papers. The nearest one would be 1863. Its a long shot but he may have stayed on board.

Hi T mo yep have tried searching that way bt only getting passenger list for what seems to have been a very hazerdous voyage to Australia in 1854 and her only claim to fame as such is that she set a record time that help for 9 years after that.

You would need to contact the Memorial University of Newfoundland Maritime History Archive.
Their research service is very good but they do charge C$40 minimum. Tanya is the lady to talk to.

All crew agreements are indexed via the ships official number.

Hi there,
I realise that your post is now 5 years old! but I wonder how you got on with any info on the Genghis Khan. I too am trying to find any info on a William Sharp who was also listed on the ship at the time of the 1861 census. Did you manage to find any crew lists?
Cheers,
Sarah
