I haven't been able to confirm these facts but family info says Patrick was born 15 June 1853 married Ellen Smiddy 14 April 1857.

His parents were Michael Higgins and Margaret O'Connell

Ellen was definitely from near Ladysbridge and a distant cousin from that side of the family says that the Smiddys and Higgins were great friends in those days. Unfortunately none of her info has supporting documentation. She was a Smiddy before she married.

Also that there was some connection with igtermurragh castle but I can't find any info re that. Maybe I should add another post. I'm new to this!

So it seems that Patrick was from Ballycotton & ellen from near Ladysbridge.
When did they emigrate to Australia? Did they marry in Ireland or Aus?

I live in the area and assist people with family history so I will do some searching for you. Regards Frances :)

Thanks Frances
I wish I'd known about this site earlier. I was visiting said distant cousins last week! I'm on holiday from Australia until next weekend. I'm not sure when Patrick and Ellen went to Australia but they were married in Ireland before they left. When I get back home I'll also follow up with some other cousins who live there and see what other info I can find. I'm sure there were other brothers and sisters still in Ireland
 :)

There were a lot of Higgins & smiddy families in the areas you mention. I hope to speak to a Higgins man in the next few days (may be a descendant who knows). Will keep you posted. Enjoy the rest of your holiday in spite of the "weather". Regards F
Are you related to the family your researching?

Ballydw - Oddly enough  I am also a Higgins and the cemetery records I'm looking for are for a Timothy Higgins who died in Blarney in 1911 but according to family history was buried in Templecurraheen  (see other thread). His father was Garrett Higgins b.1814 in Cork and was living in Poulacurry, Glanmire in 1853 according to Griffths Valuations. May not be a connection to your Higgins but who knows.
