Chapman - Rotherham and Scotland

I am looking for information about Thomas Chapman (born c1813 in Scotland). The census searches show him living in Westgate, Rotherham from 1851, but his wife Harriet (nee Myers) does not have her husband with her there in 1841. I think that in 1841 Thomas may be a lodger in Adrishaig, Argyllshire. How can I confirm this, and how do I find information about his birth/parents?
