Walter Herbert FOLLETT
« on: Wednesday 01 August 12 03:39 BST (UK) »
Hoping SKS can please help me.

Walter Herbert FOLLETT was born 1875-1880  in South Australia.
He went to the BOER WAR as part of the 4th South Australian Imperial Bushmen.
He then seems to have stayed in SOUTH AFRICA
From Newspaper articles(shown below) I know that he live in Pretoria South Africa.

The Advertiser (Adelaide SA)Saturday 19 March 1910
MOUNT BARKER, March 18.-Mr. W H. Follett, who had been on a visit from Pretoria to his home here, is returning to South Africa.

The Register (Adelaide, SA : 1901 - 1929) Monday 30 July 1917
Mr. A. J. Follett, of Langhorne's Creek, has had good news of his brother, Iieut W H Follett who is with the first African Expeditionary Force. Lieut Follett has recently been home to Pretoria on furlough, and has returned to East Africa. He was born at Mount Barker, and served his apprenticeship as a printer with Mr. C.M.R.Dumas in his native township. He went to the South African war with a light house contingent, and on his return was employed at the Government Printing Office. When men were needed for the German East-African expedition be enlisted again, and after six months with the forces received his commissions.

I know that he had returned to Australia by 1931 and died in Western Australia in 1935. From his death notice his wife was Hilda and sons Jack and Keith.
Hoping that some one can find a marriage or birth of his children in South Africa or anything about him in the South African records.

Thanks
Leonie

Hi found 2 entries in NAAIRS the state archives in South Africa. Try this link.
http://www.national.archsrch.gov.za/sm300cv/smws/sm300ds?20120801083557A2E34B85

Appears his first wife died and he remarried. He then died? and left a second wife? You can order copies through the EGGSA, read the sticky notes on the forum.

Not sure what kind of record I am looking at but gather that
1907 Death of Emelia FOLLETT (born LODING)
Husband Walter Herbert FOLLETT (living)

1940 Death of Elizabeth FOLLETT born BROWN
1st marriage  to William SMITH (Deceased)
2nd marriage  to Edward Douglas HOUSTEN (Deceased)
3rd marriage to Walter Hebert FOLLETT (Deceased)

Now wondering if Elizabeth went by the name Hilda. ???

Hi Leonie here is the info on how to obtain documents.

The Genealogical Society of South Africa has a "pay to use" service which will enable you to obtain pictures of documents held in the National Archives.

Go to http://www.eggsa.org and select Content --> On Line Shop --> order Archive documents.  Once you have selected the currency, select "Enter the Shop" and then select "Archive photos" (in yellow on the blue band) and follow the instructions.

Much quicker than trying to get the Archives to reply to your e-mail requests!!

Cheers Derek

Thanks for your help Derek.
I will give the suggested site a go.
Hopefully after many years of research, done by many researchers the story of Walter Herbert FOLLETTs
life in South Africa will finally be known.

Hi, this is reply to a very old message. I’ve been trying to find out more about Walter Herbert Follett.  My great aunt was Elizabeth Follett (born Brown. prev married Smith & Houston as stated here in one message). Her last husband was Walter Herbert Follett & on Elizabeth’s  death notice in 1940  it says Walter died in Australia, although the date was unknown & I don’t think anyone actually knew what had happened to him other than leaving Pretoria to go to Australia. I saw a notice of a death in Perth & his wife named Hilda. No idea if this was him. Who was Hilda? I know that Walter had been married to Emelia Loding (dau of Carl Loding) Emelia had been married twice before Walter - 1st to Pieter de Grier, 2nd to Alfred Harry Evans. Emelia had 10 children but none by Walter.  They were living at 265 Proes St, Pretoria when Emelia died in 1907. Elizabeth lived near by & must have married Walter a few years after Emelia died I think. What happened to Walter after he & Elizabeth married, I have no idea. Did he divorce Elizabeth? Is he the same Walter Herbert Follett buried in Perth who was married to Hilda?
Cheers, Anne

Hi Anne and Leonie

I am struggling too with Walter Herbert Follett .It is my understanding that Walter Herbert Follett was the brother of my grandfather George William Follett . He died in Wungong WA in 1935 . His death notices indicate he was married to Hilda . Is this the same WALTER Herbert Follett that spent considerable time in Pretoria . My confusion is that some Geneology sites have a Walter Herbert Follett dying in Pretoria in 1931 . I am coming to think they are the same person and that he returned to WA and married Hilda . Have you got any further in sorting this out .  A family tree I accessed through Margaret Morey did show Walter as married to Betty ( Elizabeth) but no subsequent marriages . Confusing

Cheers Denise

Hi Denise.
Who exactly Hilda was and if they were married I cannot determine. Some trees have her as Hilda Ankiewicz. Birth 17 Jan 1902. Death 05 Sep 1962. Records from South Africa would be needed to work out marriages divorces etc.
Cheers Leonie
