WINSTONE Howard, Merthyr Tydfil
« on: Saturday 04 August 12 13:55 BST (UK) »
I would like to know if someone has researched the family history of Howard Winstone, the famous boxer from Merthyr Tydfil.  I don't think "Winstone" is a particularly common Welsh name.  I would like to know if his family line can be traced back to Eastcombe in Bisley Parish near Stroud.

My interest is because in the early 1900s, my grandfather and his 6 brothers left Bisley Parish where they were born and moved to Merthyr and Bedlinog.  Their mother, my great grandmother, Annie Winstone, had married into the Fisher family.

Annie Winstone's family had lived in Bisley for many generations.   The village of Winstone is not too far from it either.

So I was wondering whether one of the reasons for their move was that my great grandmother, Annie Winstone, had rellies living in South Wales already.  The Winstones seemed to produce lots of children in each generation.

Of course, there were lots of financial reasons/opportunities to move as they did.  So maybe it's just a coincidence?  Or maybe not??

I'd be glad to hear from anyone with a Winstone connection in South Wales.

Thanks

Hi
Saw your post by chance whilst on google....will be back again with more information for you but just to say you may have a lead here. I am a second cousin of Howard Winstone and after teaching in South Wales for the last twenty plus years I know the surname is uncommon and those I have met  with the surname I have found I am related to. His grandfather was my great grandfather Benjamin Winstone. I know for a fact that the family was large and were not from Merthyr Tydfil originally. Will have a think....

Hello Chaps,
you are right, Winston[e] is not a common name in South Wales.
My interest in the name is thru my DNA is connected.
The FTDNA - William Cecil, Lord Burghley FTDNA Project.
The Winston[e] name is attached to this study.
Along with the names of Word, Harris, Webb, Gilbert, Cecil[various], Thomas, Howells and Hyatt.
The Cecil DNA Project has as it target area - Herfordshire, Gloucestershire, Breconshire and south Wales generally.
If any of these names appear in your Winston[e] heritage i am up for a chat.

Cheers
Jack Gee
