Messach Prothero, Pembroke, 1811-1847
« on: Tuesday 07 August 12 14:36 BST (UK) »
Hi, I am new to this. Can anyone help me find the parents of the above named. His name has various spellings, ie Meshach Presthro, Messach Prethro, and Mesach Prothero.  His death is recorded in Llanrhian 1847. He was married to an Elizabeth Prosser, born Mathry, Pembs, 1801.  I have found 7 children, Thomas, Mary, Henry, Mosses, Martha, Elizabeth and Levi. They married in St Davids 31 Dec 1829, however Elizabeth was a widow (I think she was married to a Mariner call Griffiths in about 1823 but I haven't found out if she had children by that marriage nor have I found baptism record to locate her mother and father.  I would be most grateful if someone could help. Thank you.

John Griffiths of Lawhadden(Llawhadden) mrd Elizabeth Prosser at Steynton 21 Oct 1823.

A John Griffiths was buried at Dale in 1823.
There is no burial of a John griffiths at Llawhadden, St David's, or Steynton.

There is only one Prosser mrge in Mathry that of William Prosser to Elizabeth Says(modern Sais or Saies) in 1792, but I do note a mrge of Stephen Prosser to Anne Nicholas at Llanrhian in 1783.

Hi  thank you for your reply. Would the baptism record for  Elizabeth identify her mother and father.  Also can you advise how I research further back for the parentage of my Meshach Presthro of St Davids? Thank you very much again.

Baptism entries around 1801 period normally show parents, but never mothers maiden name. However if you have a vicar set in the old ways then even at this date you may only get the fathers name.
I shall be in the Record Office on Friday, so if you wish I can check Mathry circa 1801 and St Davids circa pre 1813 for Meshach and Elizabeth’s baptism, unless someone looks at pr's on FindMyPast and beats me to it.

Thank you very much. That would be most appreciated. I'll look forward to see if you can find anything.

Not sure if you had full details, so herewith just in case
Steynton Mrge
John Griffiths of Lawhadden and Elizabeth Prosser of the parish of Steynton where mrd in this church by banns 21st day of October 1823 by me A. Crymes off = Minister. The marriage was soleminized between us X the mark of John Griffiths and X the mark of Elizabeth Prosser, in the presence of William Prosser and Ann Howells.

IF Wm Prosser the witness is the father and I can find no mrge of a William Prosser in the area of Steynton or its surrounds the this would add to the lightlyhood of William Prosser marrying at Mathry, which appears to be the only one that fits your requirements by year.

Searched St David’s 1805 to 1813 for baptism of Meshach Prothero ~ Nil found
Searched Marthry 1795 to 1813 for baptism of Elizabeth Prosser ~ Nil found

Searched Dale for burial of John Griffiths, buried in Jan 1823 aged 64 yrs so not yours then.

I then turned to the 1841 census and looked (as you have) at Mesach. I can confirm that none of their children Thomas 1830, Moses 1831, Mary 1832, Martha 1835 Levi 1838 and Elizabeth 1840 are baptized in the area.

This leads me to the conclusion that the family are N-C, remember pre Sept 1837 all mrge must by law take place in established church irrespective of faith followed. This law does not apply to baptism or burial.

I searched for the burial of Mesach in 1847, again nothing showing established church

I then went on more searching and found the following;
Martha Prytheroe born 06 Oct 1835 christened 24 Apr 1836 at the Rhodiad and Ebenezer Independent Congregational Chapel at St Davids the dau of Mesach & Elizabeth Prytheroe.

This then confirms the family as N-C.

Sorry not very helpful and  I’m afraid I ran out of time, as I needed to some work of my own.

Thank you very much for taking the time to do some research on my behalf. Looks like this is the end of the line for the Protheroe family unless you can suggest another route of enquiry. Thank you.

Gosh ~ there are many more supplementry documents that you can search for the area, that could well take you back further and also give you some interesting background to their 19th century history
Come down to Pembrokeshire for a holiday, spend a few days at the "new" record office next year and in the intervening time read the likes of "Village Records" by John West.
IMHO, there is far more to F.H. than just a few generations of bapt, mrge and burial's.

I totally agree. I keep imagining how life must have been circa 1800-1900. I have also been thinking I would like to visit the area to do some more research. I am still an absolute novice and intend to do some background research so I will read the book you suggest. Thank you. I will probably spend a few days down Pembroke next year because it's not too far from where I live anyway. Thank you for your help and time.
